slashpine ([info]slashpine) wrote in [info]hp_beholder,
This is one of those [info]hp_beholder fics that has introduced me to an entirely new Potterverse - one I have fallen immediately in love with, and would love to read more of.

How perfect these characters are! Their encounter with each other opens a window into each, and explains so much about them. I now feel a great affection for both of them, as if they'd been featured all along. Yes, this fic was *that* good, and *that* continuous with the Potterverse.

... Even to fearlessly showing Harry's unpleasant side, and the likely criminal aftermaths of the 2nd Voldie War. (Or "voldiewarts." like your warthogs! hee!) I love, love love Millicent's strength, and that she's not a typical JKR middle-class housewife or goody-girl or simply a pretty face. She's a richly complex, thoughtful, interesting, and utterly unique *woman.* So very, very cool.

I love how she clearly takes in battered animals, including those that many people hate like rats, but she isn't schmoopy lovey over them, or making a big public campaign, she just quietly takes care of them. Just like she quietly takes care of Dudley (after carefully and Slytherin-ly avoiding the assault), and has also taken on her aunt's store. In fact, the way she's taken on the Cockatrice is a great illustration of how the pureblood and old-fashioned wizarding world honors its obligations - without fanfare or fuss, and not necessarily with any pleasure, either!

So glad Millicent and Dudley find that pleasure. And *utter love* for your depictions of Minerva and Firenze, George Weasley (and all the other Weasleys) "a clef"! So much win. And that both Millicent and Dudley are not the conventionally "pretty people" that HP and fandom tend to overprivilege, is also awesome. This, we need more of in fanon, canon, and life! Thank you for writing such a good example of how satisfying and pleasurable it can be.
