I was just reading about the auction in Paris of many Hopi spiritual objects and this reminded me very much of that, ie: the legacies of imperialism and the refusal of dominant cultures -- even represented by sweet Neville, who does mean well -- to listen to the voices of those long disallowed to speak.
Yes, very much so. There are so many examples of this, important parts of people's cultures and histories that have been taken and are sitting in museums right now. I remember reading where a representative of the British Museum commented that if every artifact were repatriated to its own culture, it would empty all the museums of Europe. Well, no kidding — and it's telling how they saw that as unacceptable, too much of an upheaval of the status quo. Not even wanting to look at what the world would be like if each culture got to choose how, where, when, and whether their objects were displayed.
