Holy eff. This is so goddamn SMART, I can barely hold in my squee. :) So: SQUEEEEEE !!! First, it is just expertly written and structured, with such excellent prose, perfect dialogue, and a wonderful POV from the conflicted, ambiguous Flitwick. Second, how you moved this from a gen story to a pairing story so effortlessly was beautiful and so perfect. That goblins show sexual desire with different physical movements than wizards is just wonderful, and I adored that scene so much.
THIRD: a;lskjfdlsafj. This is just so clever, all the metaphors about race, heritage, spirituality, and clashing cultures (or imperialism would be another word for it, really). The idea of Flitwich as mixed race but raised as a wizard, encouraged to drop his goblin heritage, is so fascinating. And this is my favourite line among many --
"Ragnuk was my ancestor," he says fiercely. "It's as though you took my father's skull and mounted it upon the wall like a trophy, and when I politely asked for it back—" His lip curls. "—you refused, as you might someday need it for an ash tray."
I was just reading about the auction in Paris of many Hopi spiritual objects and this reminded me very much of that, ie: the legacies of imperialism and the refusal of dominant cultures -- even represented by sweet Neville, who does mean well -- to listen to the voices of those long disallowed to speak.
