Wonderful! I find Marietta's treatment in canon terrible (so cruelty is all right when it's done by someone on the side of the righteous? And we don't need to ask for reasons or circumstances or anything before we inflict a scar, one that is to be permanent on top of that?)
I love the backstory, the insights into both characters, and above all, Marietta's relationship with her mother. The writing is beautifully gently, and Millicent the lone traveller, who goes to a hotel alone at 17, touches my heart.
