This is why I love hp_beholder: where else would you find a story that takes possibly the two most unsympathetic characters in the whole Potterverse and give them so much dimension and dignity without taking away any of their less appealing traits? I particularly like Umbridge's attempts to justify the attraction to herself by wanting to find some kind of magic in Marge's bloodline, even as she admits to herself at the end that it's probably not the case. (I also love her efforts to warm up to Ripper, who also comes off much more adorably than in canon.) As for Myrtle and Millicent, I like the exploration of how a ghost might be able to make contact, and Millicent being made to feel that she's beautiful for the first time...though for me, the real payoff there was Umbridge taking another "strong woman" under her wing. Beautifully done, all around.
