What a raw, intensely physical story! From the first scene on. As others say above, it has something to do with the characters, who aren't especially verbal or abstract people, but it also has something to do with the fine line between attraction and repulsion that you're really got *right* here--I'm not quite sure I can articulate it, but it was there, in these lines, in a nutshell:
Millicent remembered why she had never liked Greg very much. It wasn’t his stupidity or his lack of conversational skills or Vince’s stubborn devotion to him.
He cried.
Millicent's attempts to distance herself from Greg's tears matched my own hesitation to see something human and appealing in this character. I really enjoyed that. I hope it's okay to say that I wished I'd seen one or two more scenes toward the end that showed us physical closeness or affection--a bookend to the horror she felt at seeing Greg in the first scene? In any case, it's a touching fic, one I'll remember. M.
