The Joker -- Entrance -- 365 words
There was an old house in a very dirty city. It was a dark night. The kind where the moon is uncomfortably dim and the wind is cold, and the fog hangs low. It was the sort of night that monsters liked to hide in.
And there was a clown, too, in an old purple suit, with a big red smile. He had a lot of names, and didn’t particularly mind what you called him, as long as he could make you laugh. Or you made him laugh – whichever came first.
He liked nothing better than causing mischief, and his whole day had been filled with doing just that. In the morning, he had made a whole school bus full of children’s day brighter. Or, at least, he had left them all with big smiles just like his. In the afternoon, he had been making new friends with some of the escaped inmates from the Asylum, because they were very lonely and scared, and needed friends. He made them promises, and told them pretty stories, and they agreed to help him with his little games if he quieted the voices in their heads and made the monsters in the dark go away.
And the clown did very much like night (all the better for surprising people, after all) but he was also very tired. It was late, and just the sort of hour where it’s best to find somewhere nice and cozy to settle down, and maybe rest. The clown liked to do that as much as anyone else, though he kept odd hours, and usually when he slept, he spent that time dreaming all the fun he would have the next day.
But when he found the old house, he was delighted, because it hadn’t been there the day before, and so he thought that it might be worth exploring. That was another thing he liked best. Exploring, and finding the dark places where secrets sleep.
He pushed open the creaky old gate, shambled up the path and peeked inside the door. When he saw all the people inside, his big red grin grew even wider.
He decided he would make them smile, too.
