It's the fifth night Ana Lucia's been here, and she's starting to crack, to put it lightly. Whenever she dares to leave her room - and she doesn't, unless she's rushing to the kitchen nearby - she swears she hears footsteps behind her, followed by what sounds like a little girl's laughter. But, of course, whenever she turns around, there's nothing there. Now, as she lies in her bed trying to sleep, she's questioning her decision to not speak to anybody else here. She knew there were people inhabiting the rooms around hers, yet she wasn't sure if she trusted them enough to initiate contact. Hell, what if they were the people who brought her here? What if they were the ones watching her, the ones fucking with her sanity at every waking moment? She tells herself she can't risk it, but she's all too aware that she can't handle this place on her own. She couldn't handle her empty apartment after she lost her baby, after Danny left. And she's beginning to realize she can't handle her self-imposed loneliness in this place. She sits up in her bed, rubbing her temples. And then she hears it. It's a quiet chuckle, before becoming a crescendo of manic, high-pitched giggling. And it sounds like it's coming from under her fucking bed. "NO!" Ana bellows, ripping the covers off her and leaping from her bed. She rushes out of her room, still in her pajamas, and bangs on the closest door she finds. The laughter filters out of Ana's room and fills the hallway. "Is anybody in here?" Her knocks are now fervent, frenzied. The wretched giggling continues... |
