Who: Heather and James
What: A non valentines day date
When: February 12th (backdated)
Rating: R
Status: Complete
When James had called to ask Heather to dinner, she had said yes with no hesitation. Sure, it was still weird for the vacation fling to be in her real world, but she really enjoyed time with him. They got along well, found things to talk about, and well, she was pretty much thrilled that even after knowing who she was in her everyday life...he still seemed to like her.
After work Friday she rushed home, did what she could to make herself look presentable without looking like she was trying too hard and Heather was fairly happy with her appearance by the time that James was ringing her doorbell. “Hey.” A bright smile lit her face as she opened the door. ‘You are right on time.”
Since they’d run into one another at Christmas, James and Heather had been seeing quite a bit of each other. Things still felt a little strange, getting to know each other in the real world after all that had passed between them in Greece but it was better. He liked spending time with her, she was funny and interesting and she’d rekindled his interest in reading something other than comic books.
When February rolled around, it hit him that they’d be together on Valentine’s Day, or so he hoped, but trying to do something on that day was usually crazy so he’d made plans for the Friday prior. He knew she wouldn’t want anything fancy so he’d picked the restaurant they’d gone to on their first date here and stopped and picked up half a dozen roses on the way. James remembered reading somewhere that the colors of roses meant different things so he asked the clerk at the florist who explained it to him and he left with three pink and three red roses. Apparently that meant friendship that could possibly be more. At least James hoped it would be, it wasn’t something he’d thought about asking her.
He smiled when she opened the door and handed her the roses. “Happy Valentine’s Day two days early,” he said. “you look great.”
Heather hadn’t given much thought to Valentine’s day, she rarely did since it wasn’t actually a holiday that she liked. She figured it was pretty silly to have one day where someone HAD to show how much they cared about you. In her opinion that should happen all the time. She was surprised when she saw the roses, even more so when James said that.
He had no way of knowing how she felt about the holiday though, Heather knew that full well so she did her best to smile as she accepted the flowers (which she thought were gorgeous) “Valentine’s day, oh yea, that’s this weekend. These are beautiful James. Thank you.”
“You’re welcome,” he said. “I thought we’d just celebrate tonight since it’ll be nuts on Sunday.” It had never occurred to him that Heather might not be a Valentine’s Day fan but he was glad she liked the flowers.
“That sounds like a great plan.” Heather assured him. She wasn’t sure if it was, but if he wanted to...well he looked so adorable, and the idea was sweet, she couldn’t tell him that she’d really rather skip Valentine’s day when he had went to the trouble right? “Let me put these in water, ok?” She asked walking away to do that quickly and then heading back to James. ‘So ready to go?”
“Sure,” he said and stepped outside, waiting for her to lock the door before taking her hand and leading her to his car. It was a nice night, it was warm but not too warm and he opened the door for her with a smile. “At least the weather is nice,” he said and then asked himself why he said something so mundane.
“It is.” Heather agreed with a smile as she settled into the car. “And now that we’ve covered the weather.” She teased as he settled into the driver's seat. “Where are we headed tonight? I skipped lunch today, so I’m kind of starving.”
“Do you like sushi?” James asked. He thought that she did but he couldn’t remember. “I was thinking about Katsuya. I’ve been there a few times, it’s really good.”
“I love sushi.” Heather admitted as she looked over at him. She liked this how comfortable she felt with James, considering she didn’t often feel comfortable with people a lot of times anyway. She’d really been looking forward to this date, and was thrilled that they were on their way somewhere.
“Great. I thought I remembered you telling me that,” he said, glad that he’d actually remembered. “Hopefully it’s not too crowded. i called ahead since it was Friday night so we should be good.” It was a popular place and a lot of people went there for celebrity sightings but James could safely say he’d never seen on there. Then again he really was just there for the sushi.
They pulled up in front of the restaurant which had valet service of course and James usually didn’t bother, he just parked a block or so away and walked but tonight he was trying to impress Heather so he gave his car to the valet, who smirked a little bit, unimpressed with the Hyundai Sonata, and took Heather’s hand. They walked inside and it wasn’t crowded to James’ relief and they got their table pretty quickly. “Well here we are,” he said, smiling at Heather and reaching across the table for her hand.
Heather had to smile when James used the valet, because she was pretty sure that he hadn’t any other time they had gone out. It was sweet, that he was using it that night though, and the table they were led to was great. “Here we are.” She agreed as she tangled her fingers with his, really enjoying the smile on his face, and the romance of the moment, before the romance of the moment hit her, and she remembered he had mentioned celebrating Valentine’s day, and Heather realized the valet, and this beautiful table was part of that. She was torn as to whether she was impressed , or just a little annoyed because she didn’t like the idea of forced romance. It didn’t matter though, right? He was trying, that was important . “This is great James, really.”
“I’m glad you like it,” he said. It never crossed his mind that Heather might not like Valentine’s Day but the truth was that he wasn’t just doing any of this because of that fact. He really liked her and
it was time he let her know that, it just happened that it was on a holiday that….”Look,” he said and squeezed her hand. “it just now hit me. You must think that I’m doing this because it’s Valentine’s Day. The truth is that I didn’t even make the connection when I planned tonight and then it hit me and I was afraid that you’d be disappointed if I didn’t do something so I bought you roses.” he gave her a sheepish grin. “so the rest of this was going to happen anyway, well maybe not the valet but you’re wearing heels and I didn’t want you to have to walk. The real reason I did this was because I really like you. I mean you knew that obviously from vacation but it’s different here, we’re our real selves and you still like me. I mean I think you do...I hope you do.”
A look of surprise crossed Heather's face as he squeezed her hand, had he read her mind? She laughed a little at the thought, and a little in relief. “That’s what I was thinking.” She admitted. “And I was thinking this is really sweet, but I don’t really like Valentine’s day. I think it’s silly to have a holiday where people have to say they love you, and show you that they care about you. that’s something that should happen all the time, you know?” She shrugged then. “I’m glad it’s not the reason you did this...and well. I’m glad that you said that. The liking me part? Because it’s the same for me James. I kind of wanted to leave the whole vacation thing behind at first, I’m so different everyday than I was in Greece...but you’re amazing. You really are.”
“I agree, it’s the kind of thing you should always do but a lot of people don’t remember so Valentine’s Day is good for them but it’s sad that so many people only do it because they feel like they have to,” he smiled at her. “I’m kind of a hopeless romantic I guess but I’m the guy who might just send you flowers one day for no reason. I wasn’t sure about the vacation thing either, that’s something I’ve never done before but i’m glad it happened and I’m also glad that you’re still willing to go out with me even though I work in a morgue. A lot of women get grossed out.”
“”A hopeless romantic?” Heather questioned, running that thought over in her mind. She was pretty sure that she had never dated one of those before...she was pretty sure she liked it. “I think I can deal with that.” She decided as she squeezed his hand back. “And that’s just your job, at least you don’t have to deal with a lot of annoying people all day.”
“Well sometimes the cops can be annoying,” he admitted. “especially if it’s my brother or sister and they’re wanting information for a case but it’s all part of their job.” The waiter came by just then and James had to let go of Heather’s hand so they could order but as soon as he walked away, he took it again. “I like it because it’s like solving a mystery sometimes. Trying to figure out what happened. I feel like I’m helping in a way, all my siblings either went into the military or became cops and I just couldn’t see myself in the military but I wanted to do something that didn’t involve getting shot at or shooting people and so...that’s how I ended up in forensic science.”
“Putting things together like that.” Heather noted with a smile, she really wanted to kiss him right then, he looked so cute, and was being so sweet. “I get that. I love that. I think that would be the most interesting part of your job.”
“It is. A lot of times I don’t know how it turns out but sometimes I do,” he smiled back at her. “how did you end up in the library? Besides loving to read I mean.”
“Loving to read was really a big part of it. “ Heather admitted with a shrug. “It was one way to be surrounded by books everyday, and still be able to study research things and learn things. “ She laughed. “I’m a big nerd that way, I love learning still. I actually thought about continuing for a doctorate just because I could.”
“Really? I didn’t like school that much,” he laughed easily. “but I like to learn too. I just prefer to do it at my own speed. Although I got asked to do a lecture on what I do for one of the high schools back in the fall and I liked that, it was fun. I think I grossed out half the girls though and I didn’t even bring the worst slides.”
“School was kind of my way of making sure I turned out different from my Mom.” Heather explained. “Which sounds horrible, and she’s an amazing woman now, but when I was younger…” She trailed off. “I can only imagine what the worst slides would be!”
He was curious about her mother but since she didn’t seem to want to talk about it, James wasn’t going to press the issue. “Oh yeah they can get pretty gory.” Their food arrived just then and they were soon enjoying their meal, talking easily about everything and nothing at all. He was glad that they’d gotten over their awkward stage and were getting to know each other in the real world.
At some point Heather would share the story with him about her Mom. But she didn’t want to put a damper on the evening so she glossed over it, happy that James didn’t press the issue. Dinner passed more quickly than Heather would have liked. She really, really enjoyed her time with James. And the fact that he had set up a romantic date, had her wanting to draw the evening out longer. So she lingered over dessert as long as she could. “I suppose they’re going to give the table to someone else soon.” She noted as the waitress stopped by again to check on them.
“What do you think about drinks...at my place?”
James had been trying to figure out a way to get her to his place or get into hers and was relieved when she suggested drinks. They had kissed since they’d been seeing each other but nothing even close to the intimacy they’d shared in Greece, but tonight felt different. Tonight they’d connected somehow, whatever had been missing was back and he smiled at her. “I believe they might be dropping a hint or two,” he laughed. “and drinks at your place sounds good.”
After they paid the check and drove to Heather’s place, James made sure to open the door for her and took her hand when she got out. “So what are we drinking?” he asked.
Heather was relieved when James answered affirmatively. She had been a little worried that he might balk at the idea. After all he hadn’t really made any sort of big moves on her since they had reconnected. She was thinking though, that this date was really that for him, so she figured why not give it a try? What they had had in Greece had been amazing, and she was hoping to recapture some of it. It just felt like the right time.
He was being adorable sweet, and she smiled as he helped her out of the car. “I’ve got wine.” She noted as she unlocked the door of her apartment. “And probably not much else.” Heather added with a laugh. “I don’t really drink anything but wine. So I hope that’s ok?”
“I like wine. I’m not a big drinker. Maybe a beer with my brothers once in awhile but wine is good,” James often got teased by his brothers for it but he didn’t care. Being the youngest he took a lot of ribbing anyway. “I’m not an expert, like I can’t tell you what color goes with what or any of that so it doesn’t matter as long as it’s not like the cheap really fruity kind that you can buy cheap at the convenience store.” He grinned. “That does not impress girls I found out.”
“No, no that doesn’t impress girls at all.” She laughed as he grinned and she led the way inside, gesturing to the couch. Her place was small, and clean with the exception of a clutter of books on almost any flat surface. “Take a seat, Ill get the wine. I promise it’s not the super cheap stuff.” It wasn’t super expensive either, but Heather liked it, and it was a decent bottle. It only took a few moments for Heather to gather a couple of wine glasses and the bottle, and then shed her shoes as she joined James on the couch.
“Oh and it’s not in a box either, you went all out,” he laughed and took the glass from her. “Thank you,” he said and took a sip. “This is good. I’d say more but I’m not a wine taster.”
“I may not know a lot about wine.” Heather laughed as she took a sip from her glass. “But I know better than to drink it from the box.” She teased. “This has been a great night James.” She mused as she took another sip. “I’ve had fun the last few dates we’ve but, I feel like we’ve really connected tonight.”
“Same here. Wine isn’t something that should come in a box,” he laughed and looked over at her. “Yeah, me too. I guess we just had to let go and stop worrying about seeing each other the way we really are. I like who you are, Heather. I liked Vacation You and I really like Regular You too. We just had to stop being so nervous around each other.”
“It threw me.” She admitted as she took another sip.”seeing you in real life. I'm glad though, that we ended up running into each other here. “Heather added. “You're right we had to stop being nervous, just be ourselves. “
“As it turns out, we’re both pretty awesome,” he said and held up his glass. “to us then. the real us.” It had been a good while since James had liked anyone as much as he liked Heather and that made him a little nervous. Despite what had happened in Greece, he didn’t have the slightest idea what he should do next. He’d kissed her on their previous dates but this was different, this clearly meant something and for a moment, he hesitated then he took her glass from her hand, put them both on the coffee table and leaned in to kiss her.
“I will drink to that.” Heather agreed, laughing as she held up her glass, toasting him and then took a sip. This was perfect, and she was thrilled that she had invited him back that evening. It really felt like the right time. She arched a brow when he took her glass, and then a smile crossed Heather’s lips as she leaned in, accepting and returning his kiss.
He moved closer to her so that he could put his arms around her and deepened the kiss. His butterflies were gone now, she didn’t seem uncomfortable with it so he didn’t stop. They kissed for several minutes, only breaking apart to breathe and then finally James pulled away and looked at her. “I’ve been wanting to do that for like two weeks now,” he admitted. “I just wasn’t sure if you wanted me to.”
Heather didn't even give the moment a second thought. She had wanted to kiss James , really kiss James for awhile, so she just gave into it, a smile on her lips when they finally broke the kiss. “I've been wanting to, too.” she admired, somewhat shyly. “I didn't want to just jump into things like we did in Greece, but I had been wanting to.”
“Me either. I wanted to make sure this was something we both wanted. Looks like it is.” James couldn’t help smiling as he kissed her again. “This is even better, we know each other now. I’m really glad we found each other again. I just thought I couldn’t get that lucky.”
“It is.” Heather agreed, laughing softly as she saw the smile on his face. She wanted this, wanted to kiss him, and touch him, and she was thrilled that he was feeling the same way. “You’re sweet James.” She told him. “I think I’m pretty lucky too though. What we had on vacation was great. And we get the chance to recapture it...make it better.”
“With less sand,” he said with a grin. “but yes, we get to do it all over again.” James leaned in and kissed her again, pulling her into his lap, making it easier to get to her, to twine his fingers into her hair and kiss her until they had to gasp for breath.
“Definitely with less sand.” Heather agreed. She had been finding sand in places she didn’t want to find sand for a few days after their first time. even then though she wouldn’t have wanted to trade that memory for anything. She laughed when he pulled her into his lap, the laughter fading as his lips found hers again and she lost herself in the headiness of his kiss, in the way it felt to have his fingers in her hair, to have her hands moving down his arms. “This is good.” She noted when she pulled away to capture a breath. “Us, we’re good together.”
“We are,” he said. James hadn’t expected her to say that but it was true. They clicked, they’d known that already but they’d both been too nervous to really let go once they’d met again. “I like this a lot, it feels right, you and me.”
“It does.” Heather felt a smile stretch across her face as James said that. They were on the same page, and that felt awesome. “It’s been a long time.” She noted as she leaned in to kiss him again, and then trailed a few kisses across his jaw. ‘Since It’s felt really right with someone.”
“Me too. A really long time,” James closed his eyes, enjoying the feel of her lips on his face. Growing bolder he slipped his hands under her shirt, touching her bare back and moved so that he could kiss her again.
As Heather felt his hand on her skin, she worried for a moment if she had worn matching underwear that day. She hadn’t planned on this with James that night, and she really didn’t want to be embarrassed. Soon though she was too wrapped up in his kiss to even care about that. All Heather knew was that she just wanted this with James, wanted to feel this close to him always.
James wouldn’t have cared in the least if her underwear matched, in fact he probably wouldn’t even have notice. He was far too caught up in kissing her and touching her to think about anything. He moved to kiss her neck, taking his time, remembering the little spots he’d found that summer and finding a few new ones along the way. Finally he returned to her mouth and kissed her again, moving back just to enough to whisper “Should we go somewhere else?”
He remembered what she liked. Heather could tell that in the way he touched her, kissed her, and it surprised her since while she thought their fling had been memorable, she had just assumed it wouldn’t have been for him. “My room.” She answered without a moment's hesitation. She didn’t want this to happen on the couch, that was for sure, and she had known exactly where this would be heading when she had invited him in.
“Lead the way,” he said as he helped her off his lap and then stood beside her and took her hand. James had hoped that they’d get here eventually, he’d wanted to and the truth was that he hadn’t been able to stop thinking about her since the summer. “There’s more room on the bed.”
“More room, more comfortable...no sand.” Heather teased as she leaned in to kiss him softly and then led him through the small apartment and into her bedroom. Once they entered the room she reached for him to kiss hi again, savoring the kiss as she led him towards her bed.
James followed her into the bedroom and returned her kiss, slipping his hands under her shirt and getting it over her head and out of the way. Unfortunately he had to stop kissing her long enough to do it but it was only a few seconds. Once that was done, he slid his hand down to her bottom and pulled her against him, taking the kiss even deeper.
Heather sighed as she returned his kiss, pressing her body against him, letting her hands roam to the hem of his shirt, tugging it up as soon as they broke the kiss to take a breath of air. This was it, and it was going to be amazing, she was sure of that, it had been great last time and now they knew each other better, which in Heather’s mind was going to make it even more great.
He kissed her neck as his fingers went to work on her bra hooks. James was glad that they proved to be easy to unhook as this was always the most awkward part of undressing a girl he’d always thought. When it was out of the way, he moved so that they were next to the bed and he gently pushed her down, settling her against the pillows and once she was there, he moved to kiss her breasts, first one and then the other, taking his time, running his tongue over her skin.
It was now time to just give herself over to the moment, and Heather was happy to do that. She closed her eyes as she settled against the pillow, exhaling on sigh as she felt James’s tongue on her skin. She had been craving his touch the last few times they had gone out, but had been unsure if they were really connecting enough to take things any further. Now she knew, now they were on the same wavelength, and all she wanted was to feel more, to touch and be touched, and to make very moment last as long as possible.
James could be shy in bed sometimes but tonight that wasn’t a problem. He was completely relaxed and all he wanted to do was make Heather happy, to give her as much pleasure as he could. He moved back to kiss her as they finished removing the rest of their clothes and when that was done, he stopped and looked down at her, “You’re beautiful,” he said and kissed her neck, his hands skimming over her body before he slipped a hand between her legs and gently touched her there.
Heather was far from some sort of sexual superstar. In fact she was pretty shy when it came to that, their time in Greece had been one big fluke. It helped though, that she had been with him before, and it made her a lot more comfortable, she wasn’t shy about uncovering what she felt was her far too skinny frame, James had seen it all, and seemed to have liked it, a fact she was grateful for. she moaned as she felt his hand between her legs, her hips arching slightly, encouraging his touch.
He continued to stroke her, kissing her neck, enjoying the moment. He’d expected to be nervous if they ever got to this point again because after all this was not vacation and they were themselves now. To his surprise he wasn’t nervous though, all he could think about was being inside her and he moved back to her lips, kissing her once more before he said “I want you,”
“Oh God, James.” Heather moaned his name as a warm, tingly feeling washed over her body, he was touching her with just the right amount of pressure to make her feel amazing, and all she wanted was to feel more, to be more with him. “I want you too.” She whispered as her hands moved down his back.
James slid inside her, pausing for a moment to look at her then kissing her as he began to move. It had been months since they’d been together like this but it seemed as if their bodies had not forgotten anything. They fell into a rhythm easily and James sighed with pleasure, this was as amazing as he’d remembered. Maybe even more so.
Heather sighed with pleasure as she felt him enter her, her body easily accommodating him, and then they were moving together, and her hands were wandering, and their tongues were tangling, and it was exciting, and amazing, and altogether perfect as their bodies worked together to bring each other pleasure.
It had been worth the wait. Getting to know each other better, learning little things about each other, those things made this even better. While their time on vacation had been magical, this was beyond that, this was two people who cared about each other showing each other that fact. It felt completely different.
He’d been taking things slow but it wasn’t long before James felt himself about to fall over the edge and he caught her mouth with his and began to move faster until he came, calling out her name and holding on to her, encouraging her to join him.
Heather was right there with him, crying out as her body began to tremble, holding on to him tight as she let go, When it was over, when she was laying there catching her breath, a smile on her face she kissed him softly. “I think, I think that was even better than in Greece.”
“I will agree with you there, “ he said when he pulled away from the kiss and moved to lay beside her, pulling her close. “I’m glad we got past our nerves. I’m also really glad we didn’t try to just jump back into anything. We know each other now and it looks like our instincts were right.” He shot her a grin and kissed her neck. “It’s just as great without the sand.”
