Clyde turned on his side and looked at Vi. It was early morning and she was still sleeping. He smiled and gently brushed a lock of hair off her cheek, trying not to laugh when she wrinkled her nose. No one would ever accuse him of being sentimental but at moments like this, Clyde was. He was head over heels in love with Violet Torres and he still couldn’t believe that they’d ended up here. They weren’t officially living together although she had a lot of stuff here and he had a lot of stuff there. In fact they hadn’t talked about it and maybe it was time, they’d officially been together for almost a year now. The thing was that he had no idea how to bring it up. He kissed her forehead and slipped out of bed to go use the bathroom and when he came back, she was awake. “Hey,” he said, crawling back under the covers and kissing her. “good morning.” Vi heard Clyde get out of bed, sighing as she shifted to take over more room and then realized she was more awake than she had thought. “Good morning.” She replied, a smile on her face as she returned his kiss and then snuggled into him. “It’s way too early to be awake.” She added as she let her head rest on his chest. It was at least too early to be up and about, but lying here like this with Clyde? Vi could deal with that. “Yeah it is,” he agreed and glanced at the clock. “It’s nine. That’s way too early.” Clyde laughed and kissed her forehead. “I bet the only things sleeping in this house right now are the lizards.” But they were also nocturnal so that went without saying. “but we don’t have to get up, I don’t have anywhere to be, do you?” He was right the lizards were the only thing sleeping and Vi laughed when Clyde said it. “Only place I have to be is right here.” She admitted happily. And really even if she had to be somewhere Vi wouldn’t have gone she was enjoying the moment far too much. “I vote we stay here all day.” Vi decided as she rolled over so she was laying on her stomach and looking up at him. “Maybe eat at some point….but really that’s about it.” “Works for me. That’s the advantage of working from home. You don’t even have to get dressed if you don’t want to. I wonder how many comic book geeks would freak out if they knew I’ve actually drawn a few issues of the book in nothing but my underwear?” Clyde gave Vi an inquisitive look. “Sadly I think some of them might enjoy that which creeps me out a little. Anyway this month’s issue is out on Tuesday and the next month is almost done so we’re ahead of things.” “I was going to say some of them might enjoy it a lot.” Vi teased as she thought about that. “And good. I don’t have any classes to teach today, the studio can survive without me in the day to day these days… So Yea, a day with just us? Call Tony and tell him not to come in today.” “Tony wasn’t coming over today anyway. He was going to the doctor with Noelle. He’s really into this being a father thing. I’m kind of surprised.” Not that Clyde had ever doubted his friend would stand by Noelle, it just wasn’t something that guys talked about. “he’s really excited though. I’m glad he’s happy. To be honest after Jeanene fucked him over, I didn’t know if he’d ever find anyone else. He was pretty messed up.” “I’m still just surprised that Noelle got knocked up.” Vi noted with a small smile. “But you’re right he is excited. It’s kind of adorable, you know? After all that shit he’s now happy and starting a family. Even if they didn’t plan to, it’s still working out for the best.” “I’m kind of surprised and not at the same time,” Clyde laughed. “they’re both kind of forgetful and I think that’s what happened. They’re happy though so it’s good.” he kissed the side of Vi’s head and then he surprised himself when the next words came out of his mouth. “You ever thought about it? Having kids I mean.” Vi nodded, because Clyde’s words made sense and then she laughed, without really even thinking about it when he asked that question. ‘Not on purpose.” She answered truthfully and then tilted her head to look at him, realizing he was actually serious. “And not to be all light about it, but it’s kind of true. I’ve never given it thought as something to plan out and do...do you want kids?” She’d never asked him that, and realized...at this point it was probably something they should know about each other. “Honestly? I never thought about it either. Hell, I never figured I’d find someone I wanted to spend the rest of my life with and that was a big part of it. I didn’t just want to have a kid with someone, I wanted a family.” He shrugged. “I don’t remember much about my birth mother or any of that and my dads say that’s for the best but they gave me….all of us….a good home. You’re the first person that I could imagine that with.” “I always grew up with a good family.” Vi admitted. “I can’t say I said I never wanted kids, but kind of like what you’re saying. It would be about having a family. And I was never really the having a family girl.” She’d been engaged once, but even that had just really fizzled, Vi had never been great at picturing a long term future with someone. Although she couldn't picture a future without Clyde in it. “Maybe someday?” Vi shrugged. “I mean if it happened it wouldn’t be a bad thing. I wouldn’t know the first thing about what to do, but it wouldn’t be bad.” “Neither would it but if it did happen, maybe it’ll happen after Tony and Noelle have their kid and they can give us tips. I mean neither of them knows what to do either,” he laughed and kissed her softly. “and someday sounds good. I just know I’m not going anywhere and if it happens someday that’s fine but if it doesn’t, that’s okay too. We can get old and cranky together while our nieces and nephews get pissed at us.” “There’s something to be said to being the crazy Aunt and Uncle.” Vi noted with a laugh as she cuddled up to him. She really liked that they were on the same wavelength with this. Sure if it happened they would figure it out but they were also happy as they were. “Rumour has it that kids put a damper on the whole sex thing.” She teased. “So you know...there’s a point in that column.” “I’ve heard that. It’s hard to be spontaneous when your kid might walk in at any moment but they do make locks,” he kissed her nose. “but I like being the crazy Aunt and Uncle. I hope it’s a girl and I can teach her all about lizards. Tony would crap his pants if his daughter asked for a pet lizard.” “I kind of think our spontaneous life is perfect.” Vi told him rolling her eyes as Clyde mentioned the lizard. “Noelle may kill you, and I like Noelle and am fond of you, so no doing something that would get you killed.” She informed him. “Fond of me? Well that’s good to know because I’m a little bit fond of you too,” he said and kissed her. “I’m a lot of fond of you actually so okay, no lizard. The kid’s already going to be a geek between both of them so lizard...bad idea.” “The kid doesn’t stand a chance at not being a geek, “ Vi agreed with a grin. “We will have to do our best to make sure they’re not too much of one.” She decided. “I at least have some non geeky moments.” “We will have to make sure we save him or her from that,” Clyde said. “I mean I’m a geek too but it’s mostly comics and that’s part of Tony’s life so that we can’t keep away. We can be the aunt and uncle who teaches them all the things that the parents don’t want them to learn.” “I fully support that plan.” Was it silly to want to be those people in the kid’s life? Maybe, but Vi was amused by the idea. “Everyone needs that person in their life, right?” “Oh yeah. We had them. Friends of our dads who loved to buy us the toys that made noise or had all the little pieces so we threw shit everywhere...all kids need people like that. You can imagine with how many of us there were.” Clyde’s childhood had been unconventional to say the least but he’d been happy. He’d never understood why there were people who thought the fact that he had two fathers was strange. It was just life. “Oh God your poor dads!” Vi laughed as she thought about that. “We had people like that, I already am that person for my sister’s kids.” She reminded him. “See, so much more fun to be that person and be able to leave when it gets annoying. I like our life Clyde, a lot.” He looked over at her, taking in her smile, the way she seemed so comfortable with him. Clyde would have never guessed they’d end up here but he wouldn’t trade it for anything. “I do too, Vi. I do too.” |
