Avery didn't call his parents anything, usually. When he spoke of them to other people, he almost always used their given names. There was no real closeness there, and he'd used to wonder why they'd even had kids. Not that it mattered, but there it was.
Avery just rolled his eyes when Emma said they should take a cruise together if he could afford one. She knew good and well he couldn't. Avery was conscientious in his way, and he always made rent, but he'd had the cable cut off quite a few times since he'd lived in his trailer. He did the best he could, prioritizing his bills and trying to save up a cushion, but he never seemed quite able to manage that. Well, what the hell? He wasn't the only guy in town living hand to mouth.
"I'll be working too," he replied with a shrug. "Not Christmas day, I guess, but other than that." The gas station didn't close that often, but he thought they were going to lock up for the actual main day of the holiday. "So yeah, I can do that." He could definitely manage cheap booze on his budget, such as it was, and there wasn't much he'd enjoy more than just hanging out with his cousin. Family was important, or, at least, the only part of your family that gave a damn about you.
Emma got up to fulfill her waitress duties, and Avery sat there nursing his Pepsi and idly picking at his nails. It didn't matter how much Goop he used on his hands, they were always a mess. He got lost in his own thoughts, and he was almost startled when his cousin returned with a fresh glass of soda and his plate. "Thanks," he said before tucking into the food, eating too fast but at least remembering to close his mouth as he chewed.
