Christmas AU: Home for the Holidays
Who: Nona and Avery When: Christmas Eve Where: On the road home from the airport What: Avery picks his famous step-sister up for her visit home; things get tense Warnings: Obsession, coercion, really bad weather, idk
An island of blond stillness in what felt like a sea of humanity - Christmas travelers rushing toward the doors to the circle drive - Nona paused a moment before stuffing a tiny wired speaker in her ear in order to catch the tail-end of the weather alert echoing through the terminal. --for the remainder of the night for all of Suffix County. All flights have been canceled until tomorrow morning, or as weather permits. Be advised: winter storm warning. Below freezing temperatures, strong winds, and white-out conditions projected from 3pm until midnight.
So the rumor had been true; her plane had been the last one in or out, and she was really cursing having caved to Avery and his decision to pick her up instead of letting her rent a car. Now with shooting being held off for the holidays, she could actually come home for a while, back to the small-town roots that'd brought her up and jump-started her acting career - of course she'd arrive with the freaking storm of the century. Outside, the throngs of people rushing to grab their rides out of the deteriorating weather choked the sidewalk the way the cars choked the round-about right in front of them. Nona wrinkled her nose, watching the chaos with a hint of worry. The weather didn't look so bad at the moment. Sure, it was snowing - those big fat flakes that could cover a windshield if the wipers weren't moving fast enough, but it wasn't blowing that much, and the roads seemed pretty clear. Rolling her lips, she looked down at her phone to check the time.
2:14pm, and a new text from her step-brother. He was at her pick-up sign outside the airport.
Home was a good hour and a half away in good conditions, but maybe it would hold out before getting too bad. Plus, Avery had always been the better driver, even when they were small and he hooked up a Radio Flyer to the back of his bike so she could tag along as the 'new baby sister'. Never spilled her once.
As she dragged her Prada wheeled suitcase behind her, a collection of winter layers that bulked up her Hollywood-toned frame of just five feet and one inch, Nona pushed through the blast of cold air outside and near-jogged toward the aging pick-up at the front of the line. The closer she got, the more troubling thoughts about the weather faded away for optimism and genuine excitement. It'd been more than eight months since she'd seen her family last, and it was Christmas. And, she finally would get to tell them she was engaged.
