There were so many emotions rocketing through her, she was starting to feel dizzy. Her heart was still racing in panic at the sudden appearance of Gabe in the car coupled with her loss of control. There was also no small amount of terror. He was a vampire. He was angry. That was enough to get her killed, and she knew it. In such close confines, she couldn’t figure out why he hadn’t ripped her throat out already, unless perhaps he didn’t want to get blood on his nice white upholstery. That would only keep her alive for so long, though. It was all a bit too much and, at the end of the day, she wasn’t a very complex person. She settled on anger, because it was easiest. Because it could override the panic and hide the fear. Because it let her shout and right now, that was something she really needed to do.
Consequences be damned. She gripped the wheel tight enough that her knuckles turned white and clenched her jaw. Taking a deep breath, she slammed her foot on the brake. The car was a beautifully crafted machine. With a squeal of tires, it screeched to a halt, throwing her against the seat belt and nearly taking the wind out of her. He didn’t come flying into the front seat, but she’d had only mild hopes that he might. He was a vampire after all. Reflexes and all that. She supposed, if she had a choice, she’d rather die like this, in a fit of anger at the hands of a vamp, than in some back alley, paying for what she’d done. No, that wasn’t true. If she had a choice she’d rather not die at all, but that ship had sailed.
“Why are you even here?!” she shouted at the top of her lungs, pushing away from him as best she could in the tight confines of the car. Her back pressed against the door and she could feel the armrest digging into her. If only she’d had another couple of hours. She could have made it to the border, ditched the car, and been well on her way someplace else before he’d shown up. Freedom had been so close. “You’re ruining everything! Two more hours and you never would have seen me again! No one would!” She wasn’t even entirely sure what she was saying. It simply felt good to yell.
