The older man's expression brightened a bit, lips spreading into a smile that didn't quite reach the eyes, but still managed to express fondness. That particular brand of dogged curiosity was precisely why men like Mike were useful to keep around. Smart enough to pick up on cues, but not quite so bold that he'd jump to his own wild conclusions and act randomly.
Over the years, Mike had proven himself loyal, dedicated, and rather predictable in all the best ways. People with vices were easy enough to leash, but most of them were blinded by their vices. Inattentive, uncaring. Not the case with Mike McBrayer. He was a perfect combination of sharp-witted and eager to please. The temptation was often there to clap the blond man's shoulder and proclaim him a good boy.
Instead, Belli just chuckled. "Of course I don't. That's why I'm sending you. You'll tell me who's to be trusted, and who isn't. I'm putting my trust in your judgment. I want you to be my eyes and ears in this place."
