"No, I had to worry about being the one doing the murdering," Remus reminded him. "My life was on the line in a different way, that's all. My point is that your idea of normal is exactly that, from where you're standing. The reason I say it seems like you're dismissing things is because you tend to phrase it exactly like that. 'Not dismissing it, but here's why you're wrong'. Even when such a comparison isn't necessary, like this conversation. I do think you were, if not actually dismissing, at least dismissive in the moment, when people were making suggestions in the journals. That might be why no one else is standing up, now. You took charge and didn't seem interested in anyone else's opinion. So, why should they contribute now?"
It was Remus' turn to sigh. "There were only a handful of us at first. There was no need for anyone to really take charge when there were less than half a dozen of us. With more people, it becomes necessary. Although, in fairness, we weren't really doing the same thing over and over. Same goal, different methods of research. I do understand how all research can look the same to impatient men of action, however," he teased before shaking his head with a snort. "So, what you're really saying is that neither of our future selves was any good at decision-making in relationships."
Closing his eyes, he took a deep breath. He let it out slowly, feeling the emotional exhaustion of the last few days seep back into it's place, before reopening his eyes. When he did, he turned his gaze out to the night. "No, I must have found out later. I don't know. Maybe I should have put together the pieces sooner and just didn't want to. It was easier to think it was someone who hadn't meant to do it than to think I might carry his taint. It would make sense. I don't remember much about that night, mostly the pain, the blood. But, I remember Tad saying it happened in the back garden. Greyback would have had to been waiting inside the walls to get in, I suspect. I should have realized when I got older, especially after he killed my parents during the war. I thought it was because I was working with the Order. But, I was still able to get close to the packs after. So, it must have been something else. He would have always known who I was. That I was one of his."
