"My uncle who had pushed it closer in the first place," Jamie added with a chuckle because he could see the expression on his dad's face and had no desire to go down that road...or take the fork that appeared the next moment. "I know you did. And, then, it wasn't the dark wizards that destroyed us." Or anything that his father could fight, an invisible plague that ended them all.
"She's special," Jamie agreed, not quite able to use the past tense. "She also has a soft spot for Lilu. She and Uncle Rolf have sort of taken her under their wing, let her travel about with them and the twins for awhile." Snorting softly, he nodded. That sounded like his father. If there were books, they must be for Hermione. "And in the meantime, your kids took advantage of it. Not just to hide."
Raising an eyebrow, Jamie hopped off the far end of the counter, careful to land outside the chess board boundary. "Dad, everyone born in the magical world for the last fifty plus years has grown up with the myth of Harry Potter, whether we wanted to or not. But, you might not have as many tricks as you think, unless they're non-defensive spells," he teased. "Our father-son time until seventh year consisted almost solely of you teaching me whatever protective and defensive spells in your repertoire you thought I was ready for...and a few I probably wasn't if you went by Hogwarts' standards. I don't know about joining the law enforcement training, but I'm sure we can ask Scorpius to block off some time for you and me in your diary."
Jamie couldn't help grinning as he watched his too-young-not-to-still-be-a-bit-surreal father float up and then come back down. "Yeah, I remember you two were arranging that in the journals." It didn't take long to move the counter and shelves, so Jamie could see the whole picture. "Okay. This is where I think we need to end up," he explained, indicating the lit squares. It's one move before the end. I'm going to work backwards from there to work out the moves we need to get there while you conjure us up the pieces." He cast a quiet charm to mark the shorthand for the moves into the floorboards at his feet (away from the enchanted section of gameplay). "Then, if you're right, we should just be able to move quickly through the 'game' to the end."
