If you found this letter, it means that the hex has ended and we have magic again. It also means that you made it past all my spell work, and if you did, you deserve an explanation. It all started in 2026. The birth rate was becoming abysmal and we were all pressured to do something. There were lots of meetings and discussions. I admit that I tuned them out mostly, but I spoke up to stop the madness. Unfortunately, the fear of extension scared everyone, even the purebloods who ultimately opposed the plan.
After much screaming, it was decided that we would create a range of spells that would allow people to have children without sex. The spells took into consideration Muggle science. We even got a squib doctor to help. I can't tell you the details, because I was never one for magical theory, but in 2008, we got several spells. Research turned into experimentation. There were volunteers.
No one knows for sure how the spells turned into a magical bug, or as the press named it the Pregnancy Curse. They weren't meant to, but something with the cloning technology that was adapted turned the spells into a type of a bug, must like Dragon Pox. Some even suggested that the spells were turned into a bug so people would get pregnant without wanting to. If that's the truth, Hermione never told me anything.
At the beginning, we had no idea how it transmitted. Eventually we learned that it was airborn. We're a small community. A few events (kids going and coming from school, the Anniversary, the New Year's Ball) were enough to infect everyone. Some died in weeks. Some took months, even years. By September 2029, we stopped reaching out to Muggleborns, hoping that they would not be in contact. No one else was allowed to travel abroad. Any foreign wizard working here was not allowed to go home and died here. Spells were put around the island by the international community to stop Portkeys from working. Anyone trying to Apparate out of Britain was killed on sight. It was not pretty.
When it became apparent that we couldn't stop it, we started to make plans to protect magical knowledge, but also exposure to the Muggles. Magical homes were converted into normal homes as people died. St. Mungo's and the Ministry were slowly shrunk, getting smaller and smaller as we needed less and less. All magical items, ingredients, people's vaults' keys, ministry assets were hidden in a secret vault, while the Ministry gold was put in a vault at Gringott's.
Hermione died in October of 2029. I became Minister by default, as one of the last Heads still alive. She wanted to keep all knowledge secret, leaving enough clues for people to find the secret vault and leaving it up to them to find them. Hermione forgot that not everyone is as smart as she was.
I watched my wife die. I watched my children die. I watched my best friends die. Now, I'm watching our civilization die. I'm one of the last wizards still alive. Today, I'm going to our new hospital. It's really a mortuary. I hope that I won't be the last one alive, the one to have to dispose of all the bodies, but if it comes to that, it's what I'll do. However, I can't watch magic die completely and because of that reason, I'm overriding Hermione's wishes.
The key to the Gringott's vault is at Hogwarts. There are clues about the location of the secret vault in Hogsmeade, Hogwarts and Diagon Alley. You have been smart enough to find your way inside my house, and that makes me hope that you are smart enough to find clues. Whatever you do, do not attempt to recreate the pregnancy spells. I doubt that they can be saved and the risk is too high.
I am sorry to put the burden of an entire civilization on your shoulders. I know what that feels like, but there is no one else. The journey won't be easy. Find friends that can help you. I never would have made it with Ron and Hermione. Most of all, trust your instincts and do what you must. I wish you good luck.
