James made a noncommittal noise in the back of his throat, and was glad when the subject changed away from Snape. Perhaps, one day, maybe, he might be willing to listen. But it was a very long way off - he was sure the other man had no more desire for them to start understanding each other than he did.
"That's not true," James replied, his voice d strangely strained all of a sudden. "I love Pete. He's one of us - was, one of us. The rest of it... okay, maybe the rest has some truth to it. I dunno, I haven't lived most of it. But I wouldn't have agreed to make Peter secret keeper if he was just some hanger on. It's too important." Which made the betrayal all the worse really. A large part of James felt guilty, like be should have noticed something was off. If he'd known, if Pete had said something to one to one of them...
"Well, it's good to know you didnt manage to blow it all in Zonkos. The house doesnt matter. We only really moved there because the order thought it was a good idea... the village was a bit chocolate box for me, to be honest." James was used to having people around and keeping busy - not exactly things that suited the sleepy village or Godrics Hollow. Still, if today's excursion had revealed anything, perhaps he was fonder of the place than he realised.
It was the last point that really caught his attention, a wide smile cracking his face. "The cloak? How did you-" But then he remembered, like a light switching on. "I lent it to Dumbledore, didnt I? He took it a few weeks ago. I suppose that was a good shout, all things considered." After all, if the cloak had been in the house, it sounded like there was a good chance no one would ever have found it. "Well, I hope you put it to good use. At least you didn't have to sit through the same lecture my Dad gave me when he handed it over."
