"Okay..." James said uncertainly, before offering a crooked grin. "I mean, you'd hope locking the door would work, but who knows with that bloke." He supposed he had to do a bit of thinking about the whole Sirius thing. James had never really questioned it before - it was just part of life, like anything else. But, like Peter had pointed out, things were different now.
Speaking of Wormtail...
"Pass," James sighed. He had the feeling they could talk about Peter until they were both blue in the face and still get no further. But just knowing that he wasn't alone in his conflict was enough to make James feel a bit better about it. He'd been beginning to wonder if he was the problem. He reached out, absently adjusting the shirt Lily was wearing so it didn't fall off her shoulder. "We'll figure it out eventually. We always do. Until then we can be confused and grumpy together."
"I dunno," James shrugged, his hand leaving the fabric and jumping to his hair instead. "It just feels weird, doesn't it? It's school." He hesitated. "I don't reckon there is anywhere else though. Not at the moment. I did a few trips out when we first arrived. Hogsmeade, Diagon Alley... I went back to Godrics Hollow, but there's nothing anywhere. Unless we went abroad or to the muggle world, i guess. And we know how well the castle takes that."
He was thinking out loud now, but it was all just that - words. Because Lily was right: he would never leave Harry and his friends, especially after what had happened when people left before.
"I don't think so," he said. "I mean, who would we tell? I'm not about to ask for permission." James had never been one for it, and it was way too personal a thing to leave with anyone else. He toyed with the idea for a little longer, staring at Lily as he turned this possible future over in his mind.
"But there's always going to be something, isn't there? If it's not a war or a crazy castle, we could snuff it in a freak potions accident." He hesitated, before lifting an eyebrow in her direction, offering a small smile. "I mean... we could not not try? And see what happens?"
