Lily shook her head, vehemently. "Of course it wouldn't have been on purpose, and how would you have known? If he was really that put out over it, then he should have said something to you."
She most certainly didn't want him feeling guilty about something that he wasn't even aware of until now. Sirius had always been outspoken and extroverted - some might even say attention seeking - and James had a sort of star quality about him that made people either love or hate him. Sometimes both. Remus was quiet and private, but knew how to make his presence felt, whereas Peter always seemed like he was just trying to keep up.
"Oh no," Lily reiterated, looking incredibly serious. "According to him, I was always just the plus in the group. And if things went wrong after we went into hiding, that doesn't feel like it's entirely our fault."
"It's hard not to worry about him," Lily agreed quietly, thinking about what Regulus had said to her. "Are you sure he was asking about me, and not just being in love in general?" She asked with a slight laugh. "I'm sure, had I been around to hear it, I would have definitely been impressed, love."
"I thought I was giving you some credit," Lily deadpanned, laying back to stare up at the ceiling with him. "James... should we rethink letting Sirius sleep in here sometimes? I know he's your closest friend, but there's something a little unsettling about waking up and not knowing when he came in..." her voice trailed off hesitantly.
Lily sucked in a deep breath as she considered the question James asked of her. "I'm not sure. On one hand, I feel a little bad about judging him for something that he hasn't even done yet in his time, but on the other hand, I can't just pretend that's everything fine knowing how his actions affected our family."
Lily pushed herself up into a sitting position. Hearing James laugh, even in a shocked manner, made the reveal worth it.
"He does." She felt a pang of nervousness, watching him closely as he started fixing his hair. She wasn't sure what type of reaction she was expecting from James. "Well," she started, meeting his eyes. "I was talking to Sirius about how we missed seeing Harry grow up, and while I hadn't considered it until Sirius said we should... I really do."
