James hesitated, then frowned. "Probably," he finally admitted, rather reluctantly. Peter had basically said as much, hadn't he? "Not on purpose, but... yeah, probably."
And now he felt guilty about that, which didn't seem fair. Wasn't he the one who was supposed to be feeling hard done by? But Peter had perhaps fallen by the wayside now and again. James and Sirius had clicked right from their first ever ride on the Hogwarts Express, while Remus had a way of bringing the gaps. Peter, as much as James had loved him, might have got swallowed up from time to time.
"He's not wrong there," James scoffed. But it wasn't really funny and he quickly became serious again. "I thought you were friends as well. I think you must have been. Maybe after we went into hiding it all went a bit... wrong. I think a lot of things changed then."
"I worry about him too," James admitted, letting himself fall back onto the bedcovers once again. "He was asking me about you, before you got here. He asked me what it felt like, being in love." He smirked up at her, nudging her shin with his elbow. "I gave a very romantic reply, you'd have been impressed. But he's definitely got a lot going on. Trying to get him talking about it is like pulling teeth."
"Could be? Give me some credit," James joked back, still staring up at the ceiling. After all, there were some people here who were convinced he was still a complete arse. They might be right, in certain circumstances. One such circumstance was apparently now dating Remus, but James couldn't think about that too hard because it made his head fizz. One thing at a time.
James sighed. She was right. Obviously. Lily was right most of the time; it would have been annoying if she wasn't so bloody sweet and clever about it. "I think Peter does get that," he told her, trying to be diplomatic. "I just... I'm not sure there's ever going to be enough time for that. I mean, do you think you'll ever be able to move on from what he does?"
James let out a surprised laugh. After the weight of the rest of their conversation, he hadn't been expecting that.
"Does he now?" He pulled himself back into a sitting position, reaching back absently to try and flatten his hair where it stood on end. He was smiling, but it faltered a little when he looked across at Lily. "Wait," he cocked his head slightly. "Do you want another one?"
