"It is, but can you blame him?" Lily queried. "Do you think you ever did anything to make Peter feel like he isn't or wasn't as important to you as Remus or Sirius?" She very deliberately wasn't including Harry or herself on that list. Lily was going to take it on faith that James cared about her and their son in a different way than he did his friends.
"Everyone knows how much you care about Sirius, almost as much as you care about Harry and I."
James' had a habit of holding things in that Lily wanted to break him of. She understood that he felt as though it was his job to be the strong one. Lily recognized now more than ever that he had to stop viewing himself as a one man army. She was there for him and would always put aside her own troubles to help James.
"I told him that I thought we were friends," she revealed a bit sheepishly. "He said that he's an idiot."
"I promise you, I'm not worried," Lily reiterated. She had the feeling that James might have to have a chat with Sirius sometime soon, though. "Yes, darling, I know what Sirius can be like, and I know part of him still wishes it was just you and him against the world. When I say he loves you, I mean exactly that. And I don't mind him hanging around as much as he does, although I do worry about him."
Pouting as James moved to lay back on the bed, Lily shifted into a crossed legged position. "I'll admit, there are some people who remember what an utter knob you could be, but for the most part you're well liked."
She spoke in a lightly joking manner, trying to break up some of the heaviness. Who ever thought things would end up going pear shaped?
"I wish I knew what to tell you, love." She didn't know the answer to that herself. "Moony, I can sort of understand, but Padfoot? I suppose it's not a stretch to think that since it hasn't happened yet, they're both willing to try and act as though being here is like a new beginning. Trust is something people earn in time, and Peter and the others should understand that you need time. You can't just sweep it under the rug, but at the same time Peter should be willing to prove that you can trust him."
She bit her lower lip for a moment. "Speaking of new beginnings, Sirius thinks we should have another baby."
