"He said that?" James felt confusion cloud his face for a second as he stared across at her. "I guess... he said to me that when we got married, he and Sirius stayed the same and I changed. Well, maybe not changed, but I had you to put first. And then Harry, when he came along. I still don't get how that led to him doing what what did, mind you."
He trailed off. Was she right, that Peter hadn't considerd Lily and Harry? He really hoped not, because that felt even worse, somehow.
"None of us knew what Dumbledore was thinking half the time. Most of the time, even." James shrugged. That seemed a fairly pointless point. He hadn't asked for special treatment, if that was what they had got. He'd just wanted to keep his family safe. That had been all that mattered. It was still all that mattered. Lily's touch was soft and reassuring as she touched her forehead to his, and he did his best to breathe in the familiar closeness, willing the knotted muscles in his back to relax.
"I reckon we had pretty similar conversations," he finally smiled, a little bitterly. "Although it sounds like you handled it a lot better than I did."
He pulled back sharply, finding himself staring into those all too familiar eyes. "Don't be mad," he told her, frowning. "Sirius loves you. Okay, maybe at the start things were a bit... rocky. But you two get along great now, right? You have your nights out and all that?"
He didn't know much about what went on when his wife and best mate went parading off into London together, but he was more than happy to let them get on with it. It had been a relief, really. He didn't known what he would have done if they hadn't got on. James bit back another sigh.
"I'm sorry about Peter. I don't think... I never realised he felt like that."
