"I don't know, darling, that sounded quite a bit like you were," she murmured, the lilt in her voice making it clear that she was joking. "It all sounds rather ridiculous to think reporters would make up things about you just to sell their papers, but then again what would I know about all of that? It's good to know that you've had people helping you watch your back. That makes me feel a little better." She sighed. "This will probably sound terrible, but there are times where I felt like I was the third wheel in my own marriage."
Lily shook her head sadly. "I tried so hard to be supportive of her and Vernon, but he was something else. So concerned with status and wealth, which rubbed your father the wrong way as well." She laughed at that. "You take after me in that respect."
She loved seeing him smile. "They become more like family, especially when they've been around through all the good times and the bad ones. And honestly, hate at first sight is very similar to how your father and I got together. If this Draco makes you happy, and dating him feels right to you, then I'll do my best to not grill him too harshly when I finally get to meet him." She would never fully comprehend everything that he had been through, and perhaps that was for the best, considering. "Darling, don't worry about explaining it. You survived, and that's all that matters to me. Time changes everything, so I shouldn't expect my experience in the first war to be at all similar to what you've been through."
Lily smiled proudly. "The only thing that would make it weird for me, is if you chose to have nothing to do with me."
