"You would have done well in that Department," Remus agreed without reservation, as he was struck by a thought. "I know Harry doesn't see the importance in finding out what happened, what they did, but maybe you should talk to her? With her knowledge of the department and your talent for puzzles, maybe the two of you can come up with some answers. It's not a job, but it is something that could occupy your free time and I can't help thinking that not knowing could bite us in the arse one day. If nothing else, it will help inform the work Regulus and I are doing to remember the dead."
He nodded. "That is where I feel luckiest. Although, it was so soon after, I have to wonder if the castle understands, you know? Some of the choices in who had whose memories? We joke about the castle being semi-sentient, but what if it wasn't random?" A huffing chuckle escaped him. "Platitudes are as good a way as any to try to make sense of what just happened. But, I suppose you're right, much as I hate to admit it."
Stopping for a moment, he shook his head. "No, it's not. Little cliques are part of being human. No matter what the circumstances are, people gravitate to little groups they feel comfortable with. That wasn't the war. That was school and work and society and every other place where there are lots of different people together. Life will always have a precarious nature. It's fleeting. It's what makes it precious. Yes, we now know we really don't have a choice in being here and we're in an untenable situation. But, this isn't the war and even if it was, you can't just stop feeling because it hurts. That's...how we ended up in this mess to begin with, the four of us, trying to cut ourselves off from the disaster around us, too afraid to come together as we should have, and trying to do it alone without any sort of connections to remind us what the point of it all was." Smiling softly, he leaned into Peter slightly, shoulder to shoulder. "If she could make you sound like that, she was special, indeed. I'm sorry I wasn't able to get to know her better."
