What: Lucius meets the weird Potter

Lucius had decided to eat in the Great Hall rather than his rooms. It wasn't something he normally bothered with, but spending another evening alone in his rooms was worse than the idea of socializing with a bunch of do-good Gryffindors and friends. He was going to have to start being more accessible, forming relationships with these people. For better or worse, they were the people with influence now. As much as it pained him, he was going to have to adapt to the changing landscape. So, that meant dinners in the Great Hall. How wonderful.

He was a bit early, but there was someone else who was standing outside the Great Hall looking as if he didn't want to go in either. One of the Potter boys, the younger who was apparently named after Severus and Dumbledore. What an odd combination, but then the father had never been fully in his right mind either. Still, this was the Potter who had been Sorted into Slytherin which was interesting. Also, this was the Potter who was friends with Scorpius, so Lucius had an interest there as well.

Approaching the young man, Lucius put on his most neutral face. "Good evening. Albus Severus, isn't it?"

"You're very loyal to him." Lucius would have chosen another friend for Scorpius, but he had to admit that it would be useful to have a Potter in your pocket. It was possible both his son and his grandson weren't as hopeless as he thought. "I never said he was just a pretty face, only that I would hate to see him waste his potential."

Lucius raised an eyebrow. "I underestimate nothing. I'm fully aware how important cultivating the correct image is, including using looks to gain an advantage." He was almost amused by the way this Potter was standing up to him, though it lacked any real intimidation. "I only said that it will take more than that for our society to thrive again. I want to see Scorpius succeed in this new world, and I'm afraid he will be disappointed if he expects to go back to being just the face of the moment." It had been ten years since Scorpius had been the face, and there must have been countless others who came and went in that time.

Al felt himself deflating a little. He'd never been much for confrontation. He always gave up first, backed down, went somewhere to hide. He didn't like being the center of attention. He didn't want people looking at him. There wasn't much that would make him lash out either. But insulting Scorpius, or Lilu, or Jamie, that would do it.

"Al, alright then." The words fled as the anger did, and he wished Mr. Malfoy would just let him leave. He didn't much feel like eating anymore.

"That's, fine. Okay."

Lucius could see the temper fade as quickly as it came, the fire putting itself out. So, unlike the father then, for all he showed a little spine. Lucius filed the information away for further thought. Perhaps it would come in useful sooner or later.

"I care about my family, Albus, and I only want them to fulfill their potential to the highest degree possible." Lucius saw no harm in speaking the truth about that. It was hardly a secret that Lucius Malfoy wanted to see the Malfoy name thrive, and that his best chance of that was in Draco and Scorpius. "Now, I see that some of the others have arrived. Shall we go into dinner?"
