RP: Draco and Scorpius
Who: Draco & Scorpius
When: Lunch, 21 March
Where: Draco's Room
What: Jobs, Catching Up, Malfoy Bonding

Draco had meant it when he told Harry he wanted to help. There were a lot of things he wasn't suited for, but this at least was a way he could be useful. Besides, if the hardest part was going to be having lunch with his son while they brainstormed then Draco figured he was getting the better end of the deal.

He hadn't spent as much time with Scorpius as he'd wanted to. He'd been spending most evenings with Harry, and Scorpius was presumably spending them with Albus. So he was genuinely looking forward to this lunch. And if they didn't figure out a job right away then oh well, they would at least have spent some time together.

The house elves brought over a few sandwiches and some juice, and Draco set up the little table he'd conjured. There was a knock on the door and he opened it with a flick of his wand, grinning.

"Scorpius! Come in!"

Scorpius was pretty sure that they wouldn't come up with anything. He was pretty useless when it came to this Ministry stuff. That had been a conversation he'd had not too long ago with his grandfather after leaving school. The Ministry was grey and dreadful and he couldn't imagine a worst future. On the other hand, having lunch with his Dad was hardly an imposition, so he happily went.

He smiled as he stepped in. He closed the door and walked to his father. He gave him a one-arm hug as he kissed both his keep. "Bon jour, aren't you loving this sunny day? We need to find a way to go to Paris, have lunch by the Seine. Think your boyfriend can make it happen? Because I would love it if he could. He can make it into a present for my birthday, or yours. Or really anything."

Draco hugged Scorpius back, smiling broadly.

"Can't complain about the sun. Paris will probably have to wait until we have a stronger diplomatic relationship with the rest of Europe. But once that happens I promise we'll get there."

He gestured to one of the chairs, and then sat across from him.

"How are you doing? Feeling a little more settled in? Must be nice to have your friend here right?"

Scorpius grinned. "Oh well, then knowing Mr. Potter's diplomatic abilities, it should be never." He sat on the chair, kicking his shoes off and folding them under him. "It'll be interesting how this develops, but I guess I can wait a little for Europe."

He nodded. "It's good to have Albus here. Part of me feels bad that he's not home, doing what he enjoys, but then I remember that he would have died not too far from what he arrived and I don't feel bad anymore. Time travel is really weird, isn't it?" He shrugged. "I'm not sure settled is the word, but I guess with more people, we're getting more of a civilization."

Draco laughed because, well, it was true. Harry was a lot of things, but diplomatic wasn't the top of the list.

"Well, luckily Harry isn't doing it alone. You know, that could be something for you, if you want. You know Europe, and people will surely still remember you. It hasn't been that long. You could go a long way with diplomatic relations."

He nodded, pouring them each a glass of some sort of citrus juice.

"Time travel," he agreed. "I've stopped trying to make sense of it. But I'm glad you have a friend here. I'm not sure we count as a civilization yet, but we're getting there. It's definitely worth something."

Scorpius chuckled. "You do remember who the people who do politics are, yes? I'm still a Malfoy and I'm a man who dresses like a woman. Old men don't really want to talk to me." He didn't like it, didn't think it was right but he was realistic. "Just imagine a lot of people like Grandfather dealing with someone like me without being related by blood. Then imagine how much longer it would take us to reopen borders." He had to admit that he had thought about it for a little bit, but had realized how badly it would go.

He nodded. "I think that's probably the best way to deal with thing. Don't think about the past and concentrate on the future." He shrugged. "We're a group of people not related by blood who has decided to stay together and by bound by the same law. That's pretty much the definition of a civilization. The rest- Like the Italians say, che sara', sara'."

"Ugh, you're probably right." Draco didn't like it either, but it was what it was. "Don't worry, we can talk about job stuff in a bit. There's no huge rush on it." No matter what Harry thought. He understood his need to have everything taken care of, but some things just couldn't be thrown together.

"How many languages do you speak?" He asked, smiling. Scorpius really was so smart. "But I guess you're right. To civilization." He raised his glass in a toast.

"I thought that was the reason for lunch," he said, chuckling. "But I think any position we should run it by Grandfather. If he manages not to look like he's sucking on a lemon then we're onto something." Not that his ideas of a job and his grandfather's every matched, but in this new society, there might be no choice.

"I'm fluent in French, Spanish and Italian. I can pass in Portuguese and Russian. I was learning Mandarin since the Asian market is growing so much, but it's hard. I'm at a very primary level."

Scorpius raised his juice in toast. "Cheers." He took a sip before grabbing his sandwich. "So what have you decided to do? I'm assuming that you do have some idea before volunteering to help others."

"That's part of the reason. But I wanted to see you either way." Draco made that exact 'sucking on a lemon' fade when Scorpius brought up his father, but then sighed and nodded. "You're probably right. But I can do it if you want. No need for you to talk to him more than necessary."

Draco took a drink, then put the glass back down.

"I'm going to try my hand at the DMLE." He managed to keep some of the skepticism out of his voice. "Maybe not the most obvious place for me, but I know a lot of offensive magic."

"We used to do lunch together all the time when I was in the country. Grandmother insisted that we eat as a family at least once and she knew that I would be gone for dinner most nights, so lunch was for the four of us." He shook his head. "It's fine. He's been... I wouldn't say the same, but he wasn't as bad as he could have been and I can't avoid him forever. I... don't want to. I hope that he'll still come to see me as his grandson."

He chewed his food thinking. He covered his mouth as he finished the last piece. "It makes sense, though. You worked as a curse breaker, knew all the dark spells. I think you ended up working there because you couldn't work at the Ministry with charges. I think you'll do well there."

"That sounds really great," Draco said truthfully. He couldn't help but wonder what that sort of life had been like. Family lunches, a son he was proud of, who liked him, a normal sort of life. "I hope he can too." He wasn't sure he'd ever be able to truly forgive his father. But he could play nice for Scorpius.

"I was a curse breaker?" Draco was genuinely surprised, and a little pleased, at the news. He'd been floundering for so long, and knowing that he'd found something that he could do, that he wasn't just floating from odd job to odd job, well, it was nice to know. "Thanks Scorpius. I appreciate the vote of confidence." He finished off half his sandwich, then rested his arms on the edge of the table.

"Okay. Brainstorming. You're a model, and hopefully you will be again someday. But for now, what sort of things did you like at school?"

"It is- was. It was one of the few things I missed when I traveled." Scorpius had always loved his family life and wasn't ashamed to admit it. "He really wasn't as bad as I expected," he insisted because he could tell that his Dad wasn't convinced. "Maybe he understands that things are different now. There are no purebloods. This is it. Grandfather knows how to adapt and he wants a magical society."

He nodded. "You worked for Gringotts. You worked too much at the start. Mum said that it was your need to prove that you could make things better. I don't know, but I know that you stopped working that much after she died. You were home a lot when I wasn't in school."

He closed his eyes and sighed. "Glamours. I'm really good at those. Once Mr. Potter said that I'd be great for undercover work but I don't think that's the kind of work this MLE will be doing. I did well in most classes, though. I just... didn't like them."

"That much is very true," Draco drawled. If there was one thing his father understood it was making sure he came out on top. Until he couldn't anymore. "And who knows, maybe he does understand. Just remember that this version of Lucius hasn't been to Azkaban yet, not even once. He hadn't seen what happens." Or who he turns into. "Just, be careful. I don't want you to get hurt."

That made sense. Draco had been going back and forth between a compulsive need to be useful and a deep desire to hide away and protect himself for years. Scorpius, and Astoria, they would have been the push he needed to get out and try to salvage some of the family name. He was just glad that he had seen what was really important, even if it took him a while.

"I'm glad I pulled my head out of my ass and was there for you. I know I'm not him, but I want to still be there for you. However I can."

Glamours. Well, that was something at least. A start.

"Alright. Glamours. You know, that could maybe solve your boring old man problem. If you can pretend to be someone else?" It wasn't a great idea, as far as ideas went, but he figured the more things they threw out there the more things might strick. "Tell me about modeling. How did you get into it? What sort of things did you need to do to become Al successful? Marketing? Rubbing elbows with the rich folks?"

"I know and I won't, but you shouldn't spend all of your time wondering when he'll turn into that man either, because he won't. He can't become who he was, just like you can't. You'll both face new challenges and will make you new people. I know you love him, maybe you should consider giving him a chance," he said with a sigh.

"You were, and I know all of this time travel is confusing, but you are my dad. I don't care what anyone else says or is doing. I don't want to be friends, because friends have a different dynamic. I want to be your grown son and you can be my father." As far as he was concerned, it was that simple.

"Okay, so this is a job interview," he said, chuckling. "I got seven NEWTs: Potions, DADA, Transfiguration, Charms, Rune, Arithmancy and History. I was hired by the Department of Mystery right after school. It was the most boring thing ever. Then in September, we went to France for a wedding some Malfoy relative. This photographer tells me that he wants to take my pictures. I thought he was joking, but he did and he put me on the cover of a fashion magazine. Then I got other calls. By December, I quit the Ministry and started walking down the runways. There's some mingling, lots of partying, lots of things you don't want to know."

"If that's what you want," he agreed, still rather non-committally. He wasn't sure about the love anymore, and he was especially wary of the person he seemed to turn into when Lucius was around. He'd cross that bridge if and when he ever came to it.

Draco frankly beamed the longer Scorpius talked. That was exactly what he wanted as well, but he hadn't wanted to pressure him into anything.

"Brilliant. Great. I'd like that too." He reached across the table and squeezed Scorpius' hand, still smiling. "You'll have to tell me all about the things we do together, and we can see about building new things as well."

Draco shook his head fondly, letting go of Scorpius' hand.

"No, not an interview. End of the day I have pretty much no say at all over what you end up doing. I'm not in charge of anything. I just want to help. And I figured you'd rather go through the options with me than with Harry."

He nodded, taking some mental notes.

"So, mysteries was boring. But they clearly saw something in you. What did you do for them? Maybe we can harness that in a not boring way."

"I don't want it. I think it would be good for you. You were happier when you reached some kind of understanding with Grandfather," Scorpius said, softly. "And he was better too. I don't want us to turn into the Potters, who can't talk to each other."

Scorpius laughed. "I'm glad we agree." He reached out as well, because he couldn't imagine a better outcome. "We can spend as much time together, both talking about the past and doing new thing. Just not at night. You seem to be spending a lot of time with Mr. Potter. How is that going?"

Sitting crossed legged, he took the last half of his sandwich. "It'd be fine even if you were doing a job interview." he bit into his food, thinking. "I don't know if it's easier with you or him, because I'm really not sure what to do."

Scorpius started to laugh. "You really don't want to know. All the work was classified, although it doesn't matter now. We were working on new time turners that would allow us to go back and forth in time, instead of the old ones. I think we should stay clear of that. I mean I do have the knowledge, but there's very little we need right now. Most of it is bureaucratic."

Had they reached an understanding? Scorpius seemed to think so. Maybe they did.

"We won't," Draco promised. He wouldn't let that happen. It helped that they were staring on good terms, unlike Harry and his sons. He still remembered how upset Harry had been after talking with Albus, how he couldn't understand how things had gotten the way they did. That wasn't going to happen with him and Scorpius.

"Things with Harry, they're going pretty well, actually. We have a routine." Draco had promised not to let Harry forget about him, and he wasn't going to. "He's, Harry. But I think he's getting used to having me around." He smiled, the patented Malfoy Smirk. "I'm persistent, and didn't give him much of a choice."

Time turners. Of course it was time turners. Draco burst out laughing, joining his son.

"Of course it was. Bloody Hell." Now he was starting to sound like a Weasley. "Okay, scratch the department of mysteries. Let's get creative. What are some things a government needs that isn't all paper work and other horribly boring stuff?" There must be something. "Or, if not the government, something that people need. You don't need to work for the Ministry. There's other things."

"We- I mean Grandfather too. Grandmother would never forgive us if we didn't try to be a family. Maybe we should talk to him and invite him to have lunch with us. What do you think? I know it'll be strange at the start, but maybe we can convince him that family matters more than whatever he's thinking." Scorpius had to believe it, because they had always managed everything as a family and he wouldn't let a little time jump interfere, not now that he had spoken to the man and his fears had been assuaged.

"That's really good and from what I know, a routine is probably a good thing, especially one with no firewhiskey." He covered his mouth. "I probably shouldn't have said that aloud, but Albus tells me things, and- Be careful, okay? I don't want you to get hurt."

He nodded. "Let's not create time turners." He got quiet, thinking about what Kirley was saying. "I don't know how this could be a job, but I was talking to Kirley. He's opening up a club, and we were talking about a pool and sauna, but it's not like it would need anyone to run it, not really. Once the castle agrees to give it to us, it's not like it's some fancy spa that requires appointments. I don't know. I wish I could do something important, but I just don't know what."

Draco didn't exactly like it, but he also couldn't argue with it, not when Scorpius phrased it that way.

"Lunch. Okay. How about next Sunday? We can make that our weekly tradition. First one of many." And if it had to include his father then, well, he supposed it had to. But Draco would stay in alert for any bullshit.

"I know about the drinking, it's okay. He's doing better, I think. He drinks less when I'm with him. But you don't need to worry about me, he and I will figure ourselves out."

Draco would give his right testicle for a spa some days. He couldn't remember the last time he'd been to one, but it sounded like absolute heaven.

"There could be something to that. Someone will need to help, even if it's just with skincare and haircare. Merlin knows none of those Gryffindors know anything about that." It wouldn't be a full-time job though. Not at first. Scorpius would need something else as well.

"I think we need to look at this another way. I was having a hard time with it too, because I kept thinking about it as the thing I was deciding to do forever. It doesn't have to be that. You can ret different things. If something doesn't fit you can try something else. And eventually we'll be at a place where every single person doesn't have to work here to keep things going. Then you can have France and Runways back."

Scorpius was taken aback. It wasn't what he'd meant, but his Dad needed time to adjust as well. He didn't understand how things were done. "Sure, we can work up to daily, like we used to."

He supposed that it had been a problem much longer than Albus suspected if it was already bad enough that his father had noticed. "That's good. I don't think they ever found a way to make him stop or even slow down."

He sighed. "I suppose. I mean it's not like I hadn't thought about it, but I'm not really sure where to start. Where would you suggest I start? Where would you see him? And yes I know it's a tricky question since you have known me a short time."

Daily? He didn't know if he could ever do daily with his father. But with Scorpius? Absolutely.

"You know, you and I can do lunch every day. If you want. I'd really like that. Your friend Albus could join us too, if he wants. And you want."

Draco had been thinking about the drinking quite a lot, really, since he and Harry had talked about Albus and his children and all of it. Harry really did seem to drink less when they were together, and it wasn't a hardship to spend more time with Harry.

"This is everyone's second chance. So, hopefully he can this time."

Draco took his time, really considering it. This was important, and he didn't want to let his son down the first time he tried to help him.

"I think you're really good with people. I think that's going to be instrumental with things going forward. I think we should harness that. I don't pretend to know what all we're going to need, but we'll definitely need people who can, smooth feathers? The more people that arrive the more dissent were going to get. And I love Harry, but he's not the best person to come to with complaints."

"All right," he said, smiling returning immediately. "And no, lunch is for the two of us, and we can ease in Grandfather once a week. Al and I can have the other meals together. Not that I don't want him to join on occasion, but lunch is for us."

He really hoped that things would work out with Mr. Potter, for everyone's sake. "I want you happy, and as long as he is who makes you happy, then it's fine but if he starts to pull the crap he did with his family, I'm hexing him. I don't care how powerful he is."

He tilted his head. "Like a social director? Maybe we can give it a more official title to he likes it better. You say social director and he'll laugh in our face. How about Office of Relocation? We have to help the new Muggleborns too, right? I could help with what Savannah is doing since she doesn't really like it. Organize parties, hand out rooms, because sooner or later, we will run out of room if people take over the entire slytherin dormitory." He stopped suddenly.. "Wait, let's backtrack for a moment. You love Harry? You've only dated a few weeks and you love him?"

Draco didn't think he'd smiled this much in years. He just couldn't seem to stop.

"Lunch is for us," he agreed.

It was sweet, how protective Scorpius was of him. He almost said that it was his job to worry, and not the other way around. But he worried about his own father all the time.

"I don't know exactly what happened with his family. But I don't put up with much. Besides, he and Ginny broke up because he didn't make enough time for her, which won't happen with me. I won't let it. Hence me barging in on him every night. But I appreciate that."

"Office of Relocation. You know, I really like that. And the more people we get the more we'll need that. No one could say that isn't going to be essential." He felt a lot better about it already. He really wanted Scorpius to be happy, as well as productive.

Draco grimaced, he really hadn't meant love like that, but he also couldn't really deny it.

"It's not... I won't say I don't love him. I, I sort of have for, well, years. But like I told him, I loved my idea of him, the person I thought he was. Now, now we're seeing each other as.we really are. And we're taking is slow. So, there's that."

"Perfect!" Scorpius knew that he'd win the battle about his grandfather eventually. His dad could never deny him anything and his grandfather would come around. He had to believe that, because without grandmother, it was up to him to make it work, since neither his father nor his grandfather remembered those happier times.

"We don't know either, but we can count to nine, and he certainly got back with Mrs. Potter really quickly. It's the great unspoken secret that they got married because she was pregnant with Jamie. The papers called it a love story, they simply couldn't wait," he said with a snort. "Al and I have our theories."

He nodded. "And if there aren't any more people... I suppose I'll get a new job?" Scorpius wasn't as sure as Draco, considering this arrivals seemed to happen in clusters and they just had a big cluster.

Scorpius trying to figure out what his father was saying. "Okay, I wasn't going to tell you about our theory, but- We think you guys got together at some point and had some really big fight, then he cheated on you with Mrs. Weasley and the rest is history, and yes I know that there's absolutely zero evidence to support this story, but if you love this idea of him, it might not be so unreasonable that it leads to some fight. So really, really slow might be a good idea. We don't need him getting drunk and getting someone else pregnant."

Draco let out a bark of laughter, that was quite the story Scorpius and Albus had come up with about them.

"I don't think we have much time for this romance you've dreamed up for us! But I won't pretend to know the future."

He shook his head, chuckling softly, then finished his drink.

"If more people don't come we'll worry about it. Do you want me to bring your idea to Harry? Or would you rather talk to him yourself?"

"Well, why not. It makes sense. He gets married and is miserable. You got married even though you're gay. It totally makes sense, and no one will convince me otherwise," he said, because at this point he was invested in this story.

"Sure, you might as well talk to him. Honestly, he scares me more than Grandfather in a way," Scorpius admitted. "He's... I don't know always so aloof, so ...sad. It's like he can engulf you in his despair."

Draco leaned in a little, amused but also enjoying fanning the flames a little.

"I thought it was suspicious that I got married pretty much right after him. I told him so too, and that's sort of how we got to where we are now."

That didn't sound like the Harry he knew at all. What a painful future the Potter family had.

"He's not like that now. Hopefully he never will be. But I'll talk to him for you. Maybe you can have dinner with us sometime. With Albus, and maybe James Sirius too." Maybe it would be easier for them all to connect if they weren't alone together.

"Exactly! And you two were leaving the remembrance ceremony when you got here. Maybe in another life, you didn't get here, but you started to talk, you started to see each other. Oh I know, you wanted to come out. He's all private and doesn't want to let anyone know. You think he doesn't want you. Big row. You're dramatic and storm off. He's emotionally crippled like all the Potters, thinks it's over, gets drunk. Totally has sex and get hers pregnant. He gets married. You're devastated but think you could get back together and when it doesn't happen, you get married." He needed to find Al and tell him immediately. "I could sell it and make a fortune."

He smiled. "Of course not because you didn't have the big row, because there's no press here, so he doesn't care about coming out. It all fits," he said, only half joking. Or maybe not joking at all. "Sure that sounds good."

Draco watched Scorpius fondly as he went off on a whole romance novel about him and Harry. It has merit, he had to admit. He doubted it actually happened that way, but maybe. Who knew?

"Write it down, sell it to the press, we'd never want for anything again!" He laughed, reaching out to squeeze Scorpius' hand. He didn't think he'd ever connected this easily or quickly with anyone. This is what family was, and he was so grateful that the was getting to know him now.

"Okay, tell me a real story now. Tell me about your childhood. I want to know everything about you, your mother, our life."
