RP: Sirius and Teddy
Who: Sirius and Teddy
When: after dinner, March 16th
Where: Teddys Room
What: Teddy isn't at dinner

It had been, for lack of a better word, an emotionally exhausting day. His talk with Peter had gone better than he'd expected, but it still left him raw and with a lot to think about. The problem was that the things he was thinking about involved Jamea and Remus, and that meant he couldn't go talk to them about it. Well, he would eventually, but he needed to work some things out on his own first. So he'd put on his trademark smile at dinner and made sure to keep all conversation superficial.

One thing he did notice, however, is that Teddy wasn't there. Sirius had been making a point of dragging him over to eat with him and James and Remus, but there was no curly headed Hufflepuff to drag. He hadn't been at breakfast either, or lunch. One meal in his rooms wasnt that weird, but three? He didn't know Teddy as well as his other friends, but he did know he usually liked company.

So when dinner was done he set out to find his wayward Lupin. He was probably fine, but what if he wasnt? And besides, Sirius could use a distraction from all the thinking he'd been doing.

He started at Teddys room, knocking lightly on the door.

"Teddy? Are you in there?"

The easiest way to describe Teddy was 'deflated.' After the night before, he just hadn't been able to keep everything bottled up anymore. As such, his ability had not been working. Straight, dark hair veiled his eyes and the dark circles he could keep away from his eyes were all the more visible. He'd been crying off and on, had been sick to his stomach at least once. Mostly, he had just been asleep. At one point, he was sure he'd heard knocking on his door but he had resolutely ignored it.

And then he had fallen asleep again, buried in his blankets as deeply as he could. The room was dark and his head hurt and everything smelled like saline from the time he'd just spent letting everything pour out of him.

Another knock.

As much as he wanted to ignore this one, he felt like doing that to Sirius was just cruel. Teddy knew enough wandless magic to open a door so he gestured and let it creak open. Then he rolled over and adjusted his blankets to make sure he was completely covered. "Need something?" he asked, despite being muffled by the duvet.

The room was dark, and Teddy was somewhere in the nest of blankets. Sirius shut the door carefully behind him, but didn't immediately go accost him like he'd planned to.

"Are you okay Teddy?" He walked closer, trying to find him buried somewhere in there. "You weren't at breakfast. Or lunch. Or dinner. Are you sick? Can I get you something?" He saw what seemed to be a stray curl, and put a gentle hand where he figured the head must be.

"No," he answered initially which was the perfect answer to all three questions. No, he was not okay. No, he was not sick. No, there was nothing Sirius could get him. As soon as he felt a hand, he jerked back instinctively, the pressure too much. It felt like his skin was heavy or like even the slightest touch would make him crumble in on himself.

With an exhale, he gave up so quickly and unburied himself, sitting up with his back against the headboard. Teddy pulled his knees to his chest, one arm across them so he could lay his head down. His other arm curled around the back of his head, long limbs forming a cocoon of sorts. His eyes were red, face blotchy, dried tear streaks on his cheeks. "I'm sorry. It feels weird being touched right now. I'll... be at breakfast tomorrow if that's what you're worried about." He wouldn't necessarily eat but he'd be there.

Sirius pulled his hand back instantly, knowing he'd crossed some sort of line.

"Sorry. I should have asked. Is it a migraine?" He'd gotten a few of those, and they made everything feel unbearable. "Do you want me to go? Only, I hate for you to be alone. If you don't want to be. If you want to be I'll leave."

He had just talked to Peter about being better with personal boundaries, and here he was bursting in on Teddy with no thought to how he might feel. Fucking it up already. Still...

"Padfoot could stay. If you want silent company."

"No, it's not a migraine," though it was sweet of him to ask but it also made Teddy wonder if Sirius thought he was somehow... Emotionally impervious. Maybe he'd done well enough portraying himself that way. They'd all been around him in those moments where he flicked that switch and put something away in a box.

"I just... have days where I'm just really sad. I'll be okay in a few days and then I can start a whole new round of being completely inadequate and useless to everyone around me." Alright, he hadn't meant to let all of that spew out. And if he curled up again and his shoulders started to shake with silent sobs for the thirtieth time since last night, well, that was his business.

Sirius didn't know what to do. Teddy clearly didn't want to be touched, but he couldn't stand seeing him so sad. What had happened? Who had made him feel like this? His wand hand itched for something to hex.

He didn't touch him, but he did move slightly closer.

"Teddy, you're not inadequate. Or useless. You're brilliant, and funny, and worth a lot to a lot of people. Did, did something happen?" His hand hovered, aching to make this better somehow. "Do you want to talk about it?"

As much as he didn't want to be touched, he knew he had to offer Sirius something because he was such a tactile person. They both were though Teddy had his moments, like now, where he couldn't stand it. Still, he reached out and took Sirius's hand, lacing their fingers together. He figured the younger man wouldn't mind a somewhat clammy palm.

"Jamie and Al showed up - Harry's sons. They are... Older than I remember and I know I shouldn't have expected them to believe me about this. It's all so insane and the life we lived, you've got to be paranoid about everyone because all anyone wants is to get close to Harry. Jamie's trust is... Particularly difficult to earn. Being on that side of it fucking gutted me. The straw that broke the thestral's back." Okay, maybe really did need to talk to someone for once. The boxes were full up and he couldn't deal with them anymore.

Sirius held Teddy's hand gently, pulling out his wand with his other and conjuring a chair. He sat down beside him, not letting go but not increasing the pressure either.

"Tell me if it's too much, okay? And I'll let go."

He had heard that Harry's sons were here, but what the fuck? How could they do this to Teddy? Why wasn't one of them here right now?

"I'm sorry. Being rejected is... It fucking sucks." He wasn't sure what Teddy really needed right now. He wasn't sure he was equipped to provide it if he did know. But he knew for damn sure he wasn't leaving till Teddy felt better.

"Would it help to talk about it? I'll listen. Or I can be a distraction, if you think that would be better. Whatever you need, okay? I can just sit here, if you want."

Whereas Sirius was upset at Jamie and Al, Teddy understood. The situation was mad and they had probably thought they'd been abducted or something to get revenge on who? Oh yeah, Harry. He didn't begrudge them, especially Al, not being here. And maybe he was a little afraid of catching up with Jamie.

Teddy stretched out on his bed, laying on his side and getting as close as he could to Sirius without actually touching beyond their hands. It was mostly just so Sirius wouldn't be stretching his arm out awkwardly while in the chair. "I keep waiting for Victoire just as much as James keeps waiting for Lily," even though they hadn't been married, weren't even currently dating but that was a Helluva statement wasn't it? But that was the crux of it - everyone he loved was dead and the few that were here were just different enough that it had thrown him into a tailspin.

"I'm sorry... I shouldn't be putting any of this on you. We're kind of a fucked up generation," some of them were anyway. The one's closest to the epicenter. He'd been one of the first. It was very clear that he was trying to pack it all away again, even going so far as to kiss the back of Sirius's hand in apology. He could make himself better. He could force it. It was okay. He would be fine.

"Uh uh. Nope. None of that." Sirius very gently let go of Teddys hand. He knew faking it, he was the bloody king of faking it, and he wasn't here to make Teddy pretend to be okay.

"Don't be sorry. I want to be here. I came here all on my own, and if you need to talk I want to listen. You're not putting anything on me. I know about fucked up, okay? And you don't need to pretend with me. You can be as fucked up and messed up and upset and hurt and whatever you want, for as long as you want. You don't have to be fine."

He lay his hand beside Teddys, not touching but close enough so that he could maybe sense it.

"Tell me about Victoire? She sounds special. Or don't, if it hurts too much."

And suddenly, the connection he'd made was taken away and he shrank away without realizing he had done it. It took everything in him not to burrow again and hide. "You came here thinking I was sick - like a bowl of soup might cure what ails me," he reminded Sirius softly, "And don't let Harry hear you talk like that..."

He shook his head slightly, not wanting to talk more about Victoire or even think about her. If he did, what if the Castle brought her and she was from a different time and-- His thoughts got very complicated very quickly and there was a pain in his chest. "You want to help - help me pack it away before someone else notices," he was already the weakest of the lot of them, he was sure.

No one else could know.

Sirius noticed Teddy shrink back into himself, and dammit he was still messing it up. He reached tentatively for his hand again, wishing he had any idea how he could actually help. Maybe he should get Remus instead. Remus was much better at this sort of thing. But that would mean leaving Teddy alone, and he wasn't.doinf that either. So he gently, very gently, twined his fingers with Teddys and hoped it wouldn't be too much. That it would be enough.

"I can do that," he said, voice as gentle as his touch. "I, I could tell you a story, or something. I can be a distraction, if you want. But you don't have to be ashamed of this, and if Harry says you should be then I'll kick his ass, Godfather or not."

Sirius needed to stay because if he left now, Teddy would have spiraled even more than he had. So once he had that touch back, he pulled to get Sirius off that chair and onto his bed. He could sacrifice the crawling of his skin if it meant he could convince Sirius not to tell anyone else.

"Harry doesn't know - I really hope anyway," Teddy murmured, "I just say I'm sick and that's the end of it. It's my own little code just to keep things normal," he trailed off for a moment. Then he shook his head and frowned to himself, "Tell me Padfoot stories."

He crawled in beside Teddy, even if he thought that maybe he shouldn't. Teddy didnt seem to want to be touched, but he hadn't liked the loss of contact either. He just wished he knew the right thing to do. He didnt want to make everything worse.

"I got infested with Headticks once." He made sure his voice was light and breezy. "We were exploring this new part of the woods, and I had to be an idiot and roll around in this extremely soft grass. It smelled amazing, kind of sweet and tart, and I didn't even notice the ticks until the next morning. Padfoot is itchy a lot, so it wasn't until I turned back that I realized it was more than normal Padfoot stuff. My head swelled three sizes and turned this horrible shade of green. I had to tell the nurse that I had picked up the ticks on the Quidditch Pitch. I always thought that she was on to us. We were always showing up with mysterious injuries and afflictions after the Full. But she never said anything, bless her." He rubbed small circles on the back of Teddys hand as he talked, hyper aware of any cues that he should stop

Teddy forced himself into a space of normalcy. Okay, maybe he overextended that particular definition because he had tucked himself in close to Sirius - probably too close for his own comfort currently but he needed to pretend. Fake it until you make it was a very real thing, he was sure. He listened in silence, closing his eyes as Sirius's voice ghosted over him. It was soothing - much like Remus telling him stories about the farm had been soothing.

"I have so many questions," he arched an eyebrow slightly, "Starting with why is Padfoot itchy? Is it fleas? Do you have fleas? Are you putting fleas in my bed right now?" Alright, that was mostly the same question repeated in increasing anxiety. "I hate the full moon," he confessed under his breath, "It's always made me nervous - like an eye staring down at me, accusing me of something."

"No I do not have fleas," Sirius said with gently mocking affront. "My hair is a national treasure! But Padfoot is itchy because he rolls in stuff, and no one will froom him properly so he always has his undercoat. That stuff is torture. I've whined and whined, but no one helps. Truly my friends have forsaken me."

He got an little more serious when Teddy started talking about the Full Moon.

"I hate the moon because it makes Remus hurt so badly. But I love it, because it's when our pack comes together. Even during the war, when we were scattered, we always came back for the Full Moon." Though that probably stopped, hadn't it. When Remus started going on werewolf missions, and everything began to fall apart. Not that he could think about that now. He'd be no use to Teddy if he let himself fall down that hole again.

Teddy actually managed a breath of a laugh, not enough to draw him out of his depression but enough to maybe find a little amusement in life in general, "When I'm... better... if you really need someone to groom Pads, I volunteer. I'm nice that way." Honestly, he didn't know if Sirius was... well, serious, but if he was, so was Teddy.

He frowned slightly. There was something he'd never understand either. "I wish I could've done the animagus thing, be able to help," he knew his dad would hate the idea of accidentally hurting him on those nights so it was better that he didn't but... If he couldn't even keep his metamorphmagus ability going through a depressive spell, what the fuck good was he? "But... Let's not talk about the war. I don't expect that's easy."

"I will take literally any excuse to have someone play with my hair. Human, dog, I love all the pets all the time."

He have Teddys hand a little squeeze. Was any of this helping at all? He thought maybe it was, but then he didn't know Teddy well enough to tell. Yet. He knew what to look for now.

"You could you know, if you wanted. Animagus. I'd help you. But you also don't have to. You can do a lot for Remus without that. He'll have wolfsbane too, which I think will really help. But just being you is enough, you know?"

He flicked up an eyebrow for a moment, lifting his free hand to start running his fingers through Sirius's dark hair. That just sounded like an invitation really and he missed petting Conwy - but that was his actual dog. Petting a human was a bit different.

It was helping - very slowly - but at least he wasn't crying anymore. "I don't know if it's even possible for me... There aren't exactly a lot of metamorphmagi out there to tell me anything." In fact, he was now the last one in Britain. Talk about being rare. Now it was a hundred times worse. "I just need... Something to be useful." Teddy had no idea where he was going to fit in, in Harry's new world of 8-hour jobs.

Sirius made a happy little noise as Teddys fingers found his hair. He hadn't been kidding, it was his favorite feeling in the whole world. It was the absolute best side effect of turning into a dog.

"You've already got such a cool talent. It would be brilliant to change shape like that."

He lay three fingers on Teddys side.

"We're all trying to figure out where we fit in. I'm learning wand lore, I suppose. We'll see how that works out. I don't want to tell you what to do, but it seems like you'd be a natural on the food side of things."

Well, with that little sound, Teddy decided to keep going. His fingertips pressed lightly against Sirius's scalp, following pointed lines, and making sure to keep his hair back out of his face. One reddish curl returned. Teddy didn't notice.

"And it is but I've never had anyone to tell me anything about it, you know? I've had to figure everything out on my own," even when wizarding Britain had been full of life, he couldn't totally recall meeting another person like him.

He chuckled softly, "That's not easy but I think you'll manage just fine." Teddy ducked his gaze, shaking his head as well as he could from a laying position, "I just... don't want to end up in the MLE." He could do it, could pass the tests, could've been an Auror if he wanted to. It was practically a duty now, wasn't it? Being the last of the metamorphmagi in the UK.

Sirius sighed in a very canine way, shifting his head so Teddy had access to the spot behind his ear.

"That must be hard. I'm sorry." He wished he could offer more than that, but he didn't know much about metamorphmagus. He hadn't know about werewolves either, so he'd just have to start learning.

"MLE? Why would you do that?" He knew Teddy well enough to know he wouldn't fit there. "Seriously, why don't you volunteer to work with Cassandra and Peter? On with Remus in magical creatures?"

This time, he laughed properly. Sirius really was just a dog in a human body, wasn't he? Maybe he'd actually been born a pup and learned to become human in a reverse animagus thing. Was that the secret? But either way, he really got into that place behind his ear.

Teddy shrugged a shoulder, "It's kind of... been expected? I'm Harry's godson and a metamorphmagus. Practically a shoo-in to become an Auror." There was a harsh snort as the amusement of hearing Sirius say 'seriously' had not yet worn off. Give it time. "I haven't looked at that post since it was put up. Didn't know what dad was doing. Maybe I'll ask him."

"Oh, expected. I know all about expectations. I love them, really. I especially love the whooshing sound they make as I throw them out the window." He had given a big middle finger to every expectation his family had ever had for him. He'd need to teach Teddy the art of not giving a fuck. The first step was pretending you didn't care. Once you mastered that you could fail to accomplish anything.

"You should do what would make you happiest. If that's kitchen stuff, or working with your Dad, or something else entirely. And I bet that if you don't like what you pick you'll be able to switch. This isn't some sort of jail sentence."

The curls were coming back, the color returning. The more Sirius made him laugh, the better it felt. He didn't feel like his skin was going to crawl right off his bones. Teddy settled in closer, resting his forehead against Sirius's. It put them close but maybe the younger man would believe he was starting to feel better. "I like to call it 'polite rebellion.' That's why I'm a baker."

He honestly didn't know what was going to make him happy in this new world. And he didn't want to obsessively follow Remus around like a barnacle but maybe it would be alright. "I'll ask. What can I do to make things up to you for all of this?"

"Ooh, polite rebellion. I like that. My rebellion has been, what's the opposite of polite? Explosive? Horribly offensive? Willfully destructive? One of those. Polite sounds a lot better. But you know we'll need bakers too. If we keep growing we won't all be able to live here, especially once the students come back. Then we'll need shops and bakeries and all of that good, normal, life stuff."

Sirius laughed fondly, and pulled gently at one of Teddys curls. He was very happy to see them back.

"Make it up to me? You played with my hair! That's worth a million favors from me." He touched the side of Teddys face so he would look at him. "But Siriusly," he put emphasis on this time, knowing it had made Teddy chuckle earlier. "You don't owe me a thing. I want to be here. I'm just glad I'm helping. You're stuck with me Teddy Bear, once I cling on I dont come off without a lot of work."

"I think 'willfully destructive' depends on how many shoes have been chewed up in the process," Teddy arched an eyebrow, exhaling heavily after a moment. He didn't think they'd be ready for that level of infrastructure for a very long time but he didn't say as much, deciding to keep all of those thoughts to himself. "I just wish the house-elves would let me help in the kitchen but you know how they are."

He glanced up at the little tug, surprised at himself but not saying as much. "You say that like playing with your hair is a chore. I'd do it all day if you'd let me," alright, that came out more flirtatious than he'd intended it to but he didn't correct it simply because he didn't want to draw attention to it. Don't laugh, he told himself, but he did it anyway. "I haven't been called 'Teddy Bear' in a hot second," he noted with a faint smile, "I'm not keen on getting rid of you - any of you. Promise."

"If it ended with shoes I wouldn't have been disowned," he snorted. "Though Padfoot does like shoes." A Marauder Grin slid onto his face as Teddy mentioned the house elves. "If that's all that's stopping you then we can fix that! I'm dead hand at Transfigutation, I can make you a kitchen! I'll have to redo it every few days, but there's no reason you can't turn one of these empty classrooms into your own space! The house elves will give you ingredients if we tell them too. I bet some homemade treats would really raise morale."

Sirius couldn't help the slow, flirtatious smile. Sirius flirted like he breathed. And he was definitely reading into Teddys reaction. He was just affectionate, much like Sirius himself. Still...

"You better be careful. Because I'll take you Siriusly, and then you'll be stuck spending every second of every day with one of your hands permastuck to my hair."

Teddy seemed a lot better, and Sirius took the moment to nuzzle his hair with his nose.

"Well, good, because like I said, you're stuck with us now." He almost said Teddy was a Marauder, but the word caught in the back of his throat. It was loaded now. What he'd said to Peter, about none of them being Marauders anymore... He hadn't allowed himself to say it before, but he'd been thinking it. Knowing the Marauders could fall apart and betray each other had shaken him to his very core. The Maruaders had been his foundation, and if it wasn't fully rock solid then...

Sirius just flitted on past that statement like it was nothing. Maybe it was but Teddy doubted it. Still, he could take the hint to not dwell on it. Especially when that grin was turned on him. Oh no. It was... certainly idea but he had the thought that Harry might flip if they were caught wasting resources and ingredients that could be used in the kitchens themselves. But he missed the work so terribly. "Maybe not everything has to be transfigured. There might be some stuff in the research and cataloging department? It'd just be the big stuff."

Aaaand his hair was pink.

"That might get terribly annoying," he countered, "But... Maybe I'll just surprise you. Just sneak up behind you and sink 'em in." His thoughts were screaming at him to stop. This was one of his dad's best friends.

If he was good at anything, Teddy was great with body language, listening. So when he heard a little hitch, he turned his head enough to lean his cheek against Sirius's. "Okay, it's your turn. Anything you want to talk about?"

"That's the spirit! We can go see what all they've got up there, and start Opperation Teddys Kitchen!" Sirius loved having projects, especially projects that would make his friends happy.

He let out a delighted laugh as Teddys hair went pink, and gently flicked his nose.

"I like how you think Lupin! Sneaky hair attacks sound brilliant!"

He kept the smile firmly on his face, but most of the sincerity drained out of it. He didn't even know where to begin. His talk with Peter? Finding out how they all ended up? Knowing that everything he'd wrapped his self worth around was tenuous and knowing he needed to find some way to feel secure in himself by himself but having no clue where to start and trying to undo twenty years of utter self loathing so that his friends didnt have to be so completely tied to him for his sanity to stay in tact and, and Teddy didnt need any of that. He was a hard time, and Sirius was here to make him feel better. Not explode insecurity all over him.

"I'm okay. I, talked to my, to Peter. Today. It went... Badly. But then it went well again. And I think we'll be okay. Eventually."

Honestly, he didn't think 'Teddy's Kitchen' would stick. It would probably be called a drain on resources and they'd be told to knock it off. But until then, it would make Sirius happy to think he was helping and Teddy would enjoy getting his hands on some ingredients again even though it hadn't been that long. It just felt like... Forever.

Teddy wriggled his nose at the flick, laughing softly. "Sneaky hair attacks," the pink got worse, "Sneaky fingers on the back of your neck or... Wherever." And he'd leave it at that.

He saw that light leave Sirius's smile and he pulled the younger man closer, looping an arm around his waist to hold in him properly. "Of course, you will. This is an unprecedented situation, just a bump in the road. I have faith in the lot of you," he tried not to sound too obsessive but maybe he was, just a little bit. Just because of Remus.

Sirius let Teddy pull him in, tired now in a way that had nothing to do with energy. He even missed Teddys extra little flirt, something he would have been quick to jump on if he was on his game.

"It's, it's not being here that messed us up though. Being here is sort of our, second chance. I guess. We, I, messed us up a long time ago." He wanted to tell Teddy that he probably shouldn't get any closer to Sirius. Should probably get the Hell out of his orbit as soon as he could. Sirius had had three positive relationships in his whole entire life, and they had apparently been a lot more messed up than he'd let himself see. He wanted to tell Teddy that he should stay away because Sirius wasnt a very good person, and he'd just end up hurting him. Or worse. But he didn't. He didn't, because it would either sound like a rejection or like he was fishing for compliments, and neither of those things were true. He just... He just didn't know anymore.

But this was getting them nowhere.

"I'll take the faith though. I can always use a little more of that."

Teddy ran his hand idly up and down Sirius's back, offering him what comfort he could manage. "I'm sure it wasn't just you. Little pieces here and there until they build up into a landslide," things you never noticed until it was too late, he was sure.

He lifted his hands to Sirius's cheeks, making sure they were eye-to-eye, "You have all of my faith. All of it." Teddy kept to himself how he had grown up on what stories of the Marauders that Harry or his gran or the few others who knew them could tell him. It was half-hero worship, he knew, which was terrible but he wasn't about to put that on Sirius. "Why don't you stay here with me tonight and we'll go to breakfast together tomorrow. You can be yourself or Pads. Whichever makes you happier."

Sirius started into Teddys face, a strange aching feeling rising in his chest. They were so close, all he had to do was lean in a little and they'd be kissing...

Nonononononoooo This is Remus' son he is your cousin even if he's removed and did you not even listen to Peter you don't love him you just want his approval so stop this stop it stop it he's your friend and if you kiss him you will fuck it all up he has already told you he has a girlfriend stop stop stop STOP

Sirius took a shuddering breath that would hopefully just be mistaken for leftover sadness and not full blown panic. He couldn't help himself completely though, and pressed a kiss to Teddys hair. Like he'd do for Remus or James. Totally normal friend stuff.

"Yeah. Okay. We can both wallow tonight, and tomorrow we'll be pur brilliant, vivacious selves."

Teddy arched an eyebrow at what he perceived as hesitation and then closed his eyes at the familial kiss to his hair. He smiled, accepting it without question. "Or as close as we can manage without anyone noticing anyway," he agreed, untangling himself just enough to scoot into a better position on his mattress, "Alright, get your arse under the duvet and we'll make a night of it. You can tell me more Padfoot stories or I'll tell you stories about terrible, shitty customers."
