DH Drabble/Ficlet
I wrote a drabble (well, it's not exactly 100 words, so I guess it's more of a ficlet). It's from Hermione's POV after a rather big event in DH. I'm going to put it under a cut so I don't spoil anything for those of you who haven't read DH yet.
Regret
"Harry Potter is dead." boomed Voldemort's voice throughout the castle.
At those four words, Hermione's brain shut down. She could hear that Voldemort's voice continued speaking, but she couldn't make sense of the words. Harry Potter... dead? It was as if the nightmare she'd been having, on and off again ever since she sent an eleven year old Harry to defend the Philosopher's Stone all by himself, had come true. She thought she'd prepared herself. All those years of telling herself that she felt nothing more for Harry than platonic love, no, not even platonic, more like a sister's love for a brother. She even went as far as to convince herself that she could be happy with Ron, and as of her sixth year, also trying to convince herself that Harry should be with Ginny. But now all of that meant nothing as she felt her legs carry her towards the main entrance along with the rest of the survivors of the battle. All she felt now was regret. Regret that she never told Harry how much she had wanted him to ask her to the Yule Ball, how she was secretly overjoyed by the jealousy Cho had felt for her during their fifth year, how she really had wanted to break down when Harry kissed Ginny in the Common Room, but most of all, how her heart belonged, and always would, belong to him. As she reached the doors, she felt Ron's hand on her shoulder. As she looked up at him, she could see that not only did he have tears in his eyes, but there was also a look of understanding. He knew exactly what Hermione was thinking, and that deep down, no matter how much it hurt, he accepted it. Nodding at Ron, the two continued on out the front doors. As Voldemort and his followers came into view, Hermione spotted Harry's lifeless form being carried by Hagrid. It was at that moment that she knew, without a doubt, that she had failed. No matter how much she tried to convince herself that she didn't love Harry like that, she did. All of her delusions and wishful thinking weren't enough to keep her from feeling as if she could die right now. She'd never even kissed him properly, let alone told him how she felt. All in the name of protecting her heart. And what did she have to show for it? All she had was regret and a heart so broken she knew it would never be whole again.
