Who: Molly Weasley and Eddie Mclaggen
What: 3rd year Runes class
When: Monday, September 4, 2017 1-2 pm
Molly got the distinct feeling that Runes was going to be one of her easiest classes yet one that she would struggle in with her grades. Runes was the last class of the day for her until Astronomy and by the time she got to the classroom and set her stuff down and got situated, she could already feel the sleepiness set in. It was like this every year, by the time 1pm rolled around, her eyes just got so heavy. And being the first day of classes and one of her busiest days, she was exhausted and even more exhausted at the thought of having to be up until 1am for Astronomy class later.
She sat down in her seat and began to pull out her necessary books, quills and parchment for the class. She sighed as she neatly arranged everything on the desk and she put her head down when she was done. This was definitely going to be a tough class for her to stay awake in. She was happy that the classroom was so close to transfiguration because it allowed her just a few extra moments to close her eyes and rest.
She woke up to a soft nudge of a hand a few moments later and smiled as her fellow classmates began pouring into the room. The little nap did wonders for her and she yawned as she moved her things so that one of her friends could sit next to her.
The room grew loud with chatter and laughter from her fellow students and it wasn't until the professor strutted from the back of the class to the front and turned to face them all, that the noise subsided.
Molly was excited about this class. She always thought it was a very interesting subject and she was even more excited about the fact that she could probably get away with a little nap before each class so that she was at least somewhat fresh for it.

Eddie was excited. As a seventh year he had been given the option to extend his knowledge in any class by working as a teacher's aide. He had always enjoyed runes and really liked the way working to decipher the writings felt like a puzzle waiting to be solved. He had thought it would always be simple code breaking and in the beginning it had been. That was until they began looking at bits of languages that weren't commonly used. He was excited this year to know that he would have opportunities to actually work with newly discovered writings.
As the students wandered in, Eddie stood off to the side rechecking each class set of basic runes. They would begin with the use of stone runes and learning the meaning of each. Of course, he knew that many students would mix the divination qualities of runes with the ancient writings. However, he knew that runes were much more acurate and prophetic than the silliness of common day objects used in the Divination classes.
As the professor began, he waited patiently on the side for the signal to pass a set out to each of the new third years.

Molly sat quietly listening to the professor's expectations and explanation of what they would be doing during this class. She listened intently as they were told the class rules and other such things and she sat up a little taller as the student aide started passing out what he was holding.
When he made it to her she smiled at him and took the stone passing her hand over the markings slowly. The professor began by telling the students that the easiest way to learn runes is to physically handle the stones and get a feel for them and the shapes. She agreed the moment she felt the stone. She felt an instant connection to it, she felt in tuned with the stone and with the earth.
She thanked Eddie for the stone and began running her hands over the stone slowly to try and get a feel for the shape the the professor said.

Even though he was older than these students and knew the subject well, Eddie was nervous about whether he would do a good job or not. Following the instructions given, he gave each student only one rune to begin processing today. The students would be given the time to look up the basic meaning of the rune they recieved and would share that meaning with the class when the rune was called.
As he approached a young blonde, who for whatever reason drew his undivided attention, Eddie began to feel doubts that perhaps he wasn't good enough to be a teacher's aide. He noticed berkana as he laid it on the table. Rebirth and renewal laid in reverse.
*****
Molly flipped through her book quickly to find the symbol and began scribbling the meaning down on her parchment smoothly. She pondered the meaning for a while and wrote down some possible examples and other meanings. She explored in depth the reasoning for it being in reverse and came up with over two pages of notes taken.
She looked over her writings and then thought more about it and tried to apply it to her life.
She wrote that it could mean that her mother is pregnant again or that her mother wants to be pregnant but can't and many things along those lines. She wrote that something before her birth could have happened and she could be the "reverse" in the symbol. Meaning that something happened and it changed the way she was supposed to be.
She thought about how they were technically in the rebirth time after the war. How they should take heed and be careful as they continue to rebuild their world.
Her friend next to her grunted when she looked at Molly's notes and molly grinned happily. She was so proud of how deep all of this stuff was, and how true it was and how puzzle like it could all be.
She sighed as she looked at her notes again. She wasn't sure if the rebirth was literal or could mean the rebirth of a civilization or world like theirs. She raised her hand to try and get the attention of the student aide for help.

The professor had exited to his office leaving Eddie to watch the class. He had been given the task of answering any questions the students had about the rune they had been given.
At the moment he was helping a young Hufflepuff with uruz. The boy had gotten the basic meaning but wasn't sure where to go from there. Eddie explained how the rune actually represented Auroch, a type of ox that had become extinct hundreds of years ago. He told the boy he might want to examine the rune from its animalistic roots.
"Yes?" he inquired as he approached the young blonde who's rune he'd taken notice of as he dropped it.
*****
Molly lowered her hand gracefully and looked at her notes as he knealt down to answer her question. "Are the meanings all literal? The meaning of the symbol is rebirth, but does it meal literal rebirth or can it mean the rebirth of a nation or empire? And can it mean the rebirth of an attitude? Like if you have been grumpy all your life and decide that you want to be nice and change, can that be considered a rebirth?" She was speaking very quickly, the last bit just came to her, she hadn't even examined that possibility. Her mother had recently mentioned that she was going to try and be more family like towards the Weasley's...wasn't that a rebirth of some kind?
Molly tucked some of her long hair behind her ear and looked at Eddie to see if she had to reexplain her question.
*****
Eddie listened intently to all of the girl's questions. "All very good questions," he responded as he picked the rune up and turned it over in his own hands. "Each of which can be answered by this rune."
He had a bag of runes in the pocket of his robe and thought to try and experiment with the girl. "You see the final interpretation is a mixture of who is doing the reading, the purpose fot he writing. Not to mention the type of rune and whether it is alone or with others. The placement of the rune is also to be taken into consideratiion."
He reached into the bag and pulled a rune out and held it tight in his hand. "Let's see if I can show you through this rune I'm holding. I don't know which it is, but that doesn't matter. What matters is the quest behind it. So, ask me any question you so desire. Serious or silly, doesn't matter."
*****
Molly knew the placement was part of the reading, but she hadn't realized that she was a part of the interpretation. She listened a little confused and then sat up to try and make her question as helpful as possible.
"Alright then, why do we have to keep our world secret from muggles?" It was a serious question. She knew the basic answers of wizards feel they are better than muggles and keeping the words separate was to keep them safe, but more and more witches and wizards have been feeling equality towards muggles.
She looked at his hand to see what the rune would be and how he would answer her question with it.
*****
Eddie opened his hand to reveal the rune. "Othila, the rune of wealth and inheritance. It is reversed in my hand showing how one takes these things for granted. In ancient language the name of the rune means homeland. Now, then how does that answer your question?"
Eddie knew there were movements about to share their world with the Muggles. Looking at this rune from the political perspective he wondered if those pushing for the lifting of restrictions had though of the privacy they would lose were they to share their abilities with everyone in the world.
*****
Molly shrugged and pondered it. If it weren't reversed she would say that if they shared their world then they would become very wealthy. But it's reversed.
"The wealth of our world would be lost?" She thought some more. "And not just money, but the wealth of our culture and people. So muggles wouldn't take to sharing the world with us very well, so we'd be used for cheap circus's and tricks?"
She waited for his response and then a thought hit her, "Wait! Or it could mean us. We wouldn't respond well to them knowing. Since it's reversed can it mean that my original thoughts are wrong and the answer is the reverse of what I just said?" She got very confused then and shook her head. "sorry, I guess I'm not very good at this."
*****
Eddie was about to give her props for her interpretation then she went into the doubting her own ideas.
"Hold up," he lifted a hand to silence her. "The rune acts upon the question not the interpreter. You're thoughts are not reversed, the forces on the question are reversed. Take for example some of the Muggle-borns that are working against the prejudices of the war by swinging the pedulum the complete opposite direction. They are looking only at the inheritance through their Muggle connection but forgetting the impact this would have on pure blood families. Those families where the Wizarding world is truely their homeland are being forgotten."
