RP: New gym friends
Who: Paloma Delgado, Ruby Bowers
What: Post-gym coffee
When: October 4, 2000
Where: Cool Beans
Warnings: None
Completion status: Complete

After something of a lull in bookings in September, October was shaping up to be a busy month for Myrtle House B&B, particularly the latter half of the month as people looked to enjoy all the spooky, seasonal delights of Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow. It was immensely satisfying to see so many reservations on her books and Paloma wasn't worried about the cancellation that had been made just before Christmas; she was confident that something new would come along soon to fill that gap.

Living and working in the same house meant that Paloma was determined to take time for herself. That meant going to the gym or spending time with friends. Or, as it happened, making new friends at the gym.

"I feel like my legs are going to hate me tomorrow," Paloma said, holding open the door of the gym for Ruby. "So I need to apologize to them with cake." She grinned, knowing that sort of defeated the purpose of working out. "How does Cool Beans sound?" It was only a short walk down the street it was usually her coffee shop of choice.

"Definitely going to hate me." Their class had been more rigorous than previous weeks. Maybe their instructor was ramping up the difficulty level to test how far they could push. It was definitely something they were used to, but that had already felt like ages ago. Paloma's offer of coffee sounded perfect even if it wouldn't help the day after soreness they were bound to feel. "Coffee sounds delicious. Maybe they'll have one of those pastries I like so much."

The walk down to Cool Beans was short enough that it kept their muscles warm and her mind off their usual coffee order, a double espresso macchiato, and not on the usual coffee run they did for Gaspard and El while working throughout the week.

Paloma was biased due to a connection to the owner, but she personally thought that Cool Beans had the best coffee in town. Thoughts of pastries and seasonal blends filled her head before she could even see the cafe, a lightness in her step.

"Do you do any other classes?" she asked. "I keep thinking about trying something new but I can never make up my mind." Soreness from hard workouts aside, the gym had been the first place that she had started to make social connections when she had moved to town two years ago.

"Kickboxing?" They weren't sure if it was Paloma's speed or if vigorous cardio would be something she was interested in. "It's only one a week though it's a good outlet." They shrugged. It had been a couple of weeks since they settled in town and the gym had been their best outlet for keeping themselves sharp and what few connections they garnered outside of working for Gaspard.

They held the door of Cool Beans open for her ready to lose themselves in a much deserved coffee and pastry. "Is there anything else besides the gym to do coming up? We haven't done much out yet in the last two weeks." They found their way into the line that cut its way through the center of the cafe.

"Kickboxing," Paloma mused. It would be a bit of a change from pilates and normally she would call herself more of a lover than a fighter, but her recent experience of being made to feel like a messenger by her mother had left Paloma craving a bit of change. "Maybe I'll give that a try. Could be fun."

Paloma loved the question because it was the sort of thing she was asked all the time at the bed and breakfast by customers who were visiting the village for the first time. "I guess that depends what you're into," she said. "If you like bars, I like to recommend a place called Sunny's. They hold karaoke nights, comedy, open mic... And the food's not bad. Or since it's October now there's all kinds Halloween things happening. They take it pretty seriously here."

They smiled when she resolved to try it. “Find me there if you do, yeah? There first time’s always the toughest, and it helps to know your sparring partner.” Since they came to the little town they’d found it increasingly difficult to keep their mind sharp and overall engaged outside of their job and the gym.

‘Depends on what you’re into’. They hadn’t answered that question for themselves yet. Knowing their need to help people they were thankful that Qaspiel, or Gaspard as he called himself now, was willing to give them a job in his offices though they thought they’d be out more in the public then they were. Something tugged at their heart thinking of Malachi. Sitting idly by wasn’t a proper response he’d told her and every time they felt they weren’t doing enough they remembered that.

“Singing I can get behind. What nights do they put it on?” A toothy grin crossing their face. What they would sing she didn’t know, but it sounded far better than a haunted hayride or a traipse through a corn maze they were liable to get lost in.

"Sure!" It would be good to see a familiar face if she went to a class, Paloma thought, especially someone she was sure wouldn't laugh at her if she messed up. As far as her godly heritage went, Paloma didn't have any advantages as far as sports and combat, so she would definitely be a beginner.

She had to think for a moment, making she she didn't get her days mixed up. "Karaoke is Tuesday and Thursday, open mic is Friday and Saturday." Paloma had enjoyed her last night out, even if she hadn't stayed particularly late. In hindsight, there might have been some divine nudging going on to get her to meet Ram. "Some of the regulars get really serious about the karaoke and suggest theme nights."

"It sounds like a fun night." They offered. The idea hadn't been a new one, but now was not the time for them to go through the long story of how they came be here. It was long and complicated and they still found themselves missing Malachi in the small hours of the mornings. They didn't know if they would sing, but a night surrounding by the community sounded like something they would enjoy.

"Let me know if you're going to be there. I'm not sure if I'll make it, but if I do then I'd like to know there's a friendly face there."
