Alex had spent the morning gathering everything he needed, carefully selecting each item for the breakfast he was bringing to Maeve's place. The morning air was crisp as he left the bakery, the scent of freshly baked croissants and pastries filling his car. Beside them, a box of mixed berries, sliced fruits and a small charcuterie board nestled securely in the passenger seat. A thermos of coffee, strong and freshly brewed, was secured on the consol, ready to complete their meal.
He was excited, more than he would have admitted, to be seeing Maeve again, this time in her own space. The texts they had exchanged over the past weeks had only deepened his interest, and the idea of seeing her library, the one she had spoken of with such passion, filled him with a sense of anticipation.
As he drove up the winding road toward her house, Alex couldn't help but admire the landscape that led up to it. The house itself loomed ahead, an impressive, Gothic structure that seemed to have stepped out of a different era. It looked like the kind of place that held secrets, and he found himself smiling at the thought of finding out if that was the case. He parked his car and gathered the breakfast items, balancing them carefully as he made his way to the grand entrance.
The heavy door was exactly as he imagined it would be, ancient and formidable, yet it opened smoothly at his touch. He stepped inside, the cool air of the house greeting him. He took a moment to admire the interior, the tall ceilings, the intricate woodwork, and the sense of history that clung to every surface.
"Maeve?" he called out, his voice echoing softly through the vast space. Balancing the breakfast items, Alex took a few steps forward, listening for any sign of Maeve. He could almost imagine her appearing at the top of the grand staircase, like something out of a storybook, ready to welcome him into her world.
Maeve was excited for this early morning playdate. She had enjoyed the man’s smile at the library, and he was just so.. Different. In a way she really enjoyed, and had poked at as the pair had texted off and on. She found herself changing from her pyjamas, into a backless summer dress that flowed down to her ankles, barely whispering across the floor as she walked. Her dark locks had been left down, curled just slightly so they had some bounce, and she had forgone wearing shoes.
When she heard Alex announcing himself, she found herself rushing a bit to get down the grand staircase that allowed her to see him. She got to the top of the stairs a moment later, her grin growing as she started down the steps, her hands holding up the sides of her skirt so she didn’t fall. “I hope you didn’t have trouble finding the place,” she said as she reached the entrance and Alex, offering up petite hands to take anything off his hands. “Can I help in any way? The library is just upstairs.” She knew she didn’t need to point towards the stairs she meant.
The house, while absolutely gorgeous, was ancient. She knew that it was a bit kooky, but she had been able to buy it off one of her clients, the vampire who had built the house so long ago. It just needed some modern touches, and Maeve had already started a few projects in various rooms. Her own room was complete, as was the library. Her two favorite rooms.
Alex's eyes lit up as he caught sight of Maeve descending the grand staircase, her dress flowing elegantly with each step. He couldn't help but smile, both at the sight of her and at the warmth she exuded. The house, with its quirky charm, seemed like the perfect reflection of Maeve herself - a mix of old-world elegance with a touch of mystery.
"Not at all," Alex replied with a slight shake of his head. "It was actually quite a beautiful drive. Your place is… well, it's incredible." he offered her a genuine smile, appreciating the effort she had clearly put into welcoming him.
As she reached out to help with the breakfast items, he once again gently shook his head, balancing the boxes with ease. "I've got it, but thank you. You lead the way and I'll follow you up." His eyes briefly scanned the grand interior, soaking in the atmosphere. "I'm really looking forward to seeing this amazing room and view of yours. The way you talked about it…" With a slight smirk, he shrugged a little, because while he was curious about both the library and the view, Maeve herself had been the major drawing point for him.
Ascending the stairs, Alex looked around them, taking in the grandeur of the hall, before his eyes landed on the soft looking skin of Maeve's exposed back. He smiled at the way her smooth movements almost invited his eyes to drift further down to her pert little behind.
“Thank you!” she said happily, her eyes momentarily looking about the room they were in. She really did love this old house, the vampire client she had bought it off was ancient. They had been the original builders, commissioning the gothic masterpiece. She absolutely adored her house.
Her brows lifted when he said he had it, and she shrugged. “If you say so,” before she led the way up the staircase towards the large library, who’s large wooden doors had been left wide open.
Maeve led the way inside, her hips swaying just a touch as she sauntered over to the little table she had set up in front of the large windows. “I have the table over here, that way we could see the water from here. You can even see the lighthouse,” she said happily, which had been her favorite part. It was so gorgeous, and filled with so much history. She enjoyed watching it at night. She turned to Alex then with that smile. “What do you think? Too over the top? Can you tell I got it from a vampire?” she asked in a playful tone.
Alex's eyes widened in admiration as he took in the vast expanse of the library. The large wooden doors, the shelves filled with books, and the carefully curated furniture all contributed to the room's undeniable charm. But what truly captivated him was the view Maeve had promised - the serene water stretching out towards the lighthouse in the distance.
"This is… incredible," he said, his voice carrying genuine awe. He stepped further into the room, his gaze sweeping over the meticulously arranged space before landing on Maeve who was smiling at him with a playful glint in her eyes. "You weren't kidding about this place. And honestly? I love it. It's got character, a bit of mystery… and yes, I can definitely tell a vampire had a hand in it," he added with a grin, moving to place the breakfast items on the table she had set up.
He paused for a moment, taking in the full effect of the room, from the rich colors of the wood to the light streaming in through the windows, reflecting off the water below. "But no," he continued, turning to face her, "It's not over the top at all. It's… perfect. Just like you described it." He let his gaze linger on hers for a moment, appreciating the way the space seemed to suit her perfectly - elegant with an air of mystery.
As he set the breakfast items out on the table, Alex couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement at spending more time with Maeve in this incredible setting. "I hope I managed to get something you like," he said with a warm smile, pulling out a chair for her."
Maeve loved his reaction, the sofas were new. The old ones had smelled of mildew and were just uncomfortable. Clearly her client had not had a thing for knowledge like Maeve did. There were some empty shelves, though those shelves were higher up and just out of view. She still had so much space to fill, and she could feel where each empty shelf was. She wanted to point them out. But he loved this place just as much as she did.
“I’m going to host a ball for my birthday,” she said happily, dancing in place a bit by swaying back and forth. “I’m thinking Labyrinth ball scene themed,” she said, always finding something to share. “I just had my bedroom redecorated too, new bed,” she listed off, a flush coming to her cheeks, as dark almond shaped eyes looked around the space. “It is kind of fantastic, isn’t it?”
She slipped into the seat that he had pulled out for her. “Thank you,” she said as she scooted in. “It all smells delicious, so I’m positive you’ve found something.” She found herself sniffing again, the scent of baked goods, coffee, and cat hung in the area. Her tail would have been swishing it was out. “How did you sleep?” she asked curiously, digging right in and snagging a fresh croissant from the box.
Alex watched Maeve with a smile as she excitedly shared her plans for her birthday and the redecoration of her bedroom. Her enthusiasm was contagious, and he found himself drawn even more to her vibrant energy. "A Labyrinth-themed ball sounds amazing," he said, the mental image of the iconic ballroom scene from the movie playing in his mind. "You'll have to let me know if you need any help with that - I'd love to contribute, even if it's just for ideas."
He noted the flush in her cheeks when she mentioned her new bed, and his smile softened as he took a seat across from her. "Fantastic is definitely the right word for this place," he agreed, his eyes briefly sweeping over the room again before resting on her. "And your birthday plans sound like they're going to be unforgettable."
As she began to eat, Alex couldn't help but feel a warmth settle over him. I was going to hire someone to decorate, but I still need the ideas,” she admitted, not one to worry about spending the money to get what she wanted.
His words about his dreams had her smiling into the croissant, her head tipping forward so her dark locks hid her face in shadow as she felt her cheeks grow warmer. “Really?” she asked, the hopeless romantic in her enjoying every moment of this breakfast. She found her barefoot under the table lifting to rub against his calf, biting her lower lip. “I slept really well, and got up far too early. A bit excited,” she admitted, dark eyes catching the light, peering at him from her dark locks.
Alex's smile warmed when he saw Maeve practically squirming with excitement. Her enthusiasm was contagious, and it made her want to help her make this happen, one way or the other. "Aside from the fact that it'll be a ball, your birthday will be truly spectacular, I'm sure," he smiled at her.
Her reaction to his comment about his dreams - cheesy as the line had been, and he could just imagine how Dani would have rolled her eyes at him - made his heart skip a beat. The way she hid behind her hair and with the way her cheeks seemed a little flushed, was irresistibly charming. When he felt her foot brush against his calf under the table, it sent a pleasant shiver up his spine, and he didn't quite manage to resist the urge to lean even closer.
"Really," he confirmed, his voice lowering slightly as he met her gaze.
