With summer winding down and the echoes of laugher and music from the summer camps she had visited over the summer fading, the anticipation of the new school year was palpable. For the past several twelve years, she had been the choir director at a high school in the Redwood area in California and had more or less found a way to make her plans for the school year up by picking and choosing from the previous year’s curriculums, that way allowing her to easily change the plans if the original one didn’t resonate with the kids in the class. While technically she could do that here, too, this was a new school to her, so she would at least like to have her initial plan – and potential alternates – approved by the head of the music department.
Sitting at a table by the window, the sun bathing the table in a warm light, Azalea sipped thoughtfully on her caramel macchiato – sweet, warm, and invigorating, much like the music she planned to weave into the lives of her students. The café buzzed softly around her, a soothing background symphony as she laid out her notepad, pens in various colors, and a folder marked ‘Choir Curriculum Ideas.”
From her bag, she pulled out a small stack of magazines; Billboard, Rolling Stone, and Music Week. Being able to pull in newer contemporary music had always been a crowd pleaser and a way to change the dynamic in the choir room.
