Aubrey & Open
Despite not being a person who sought the limelight, Aubrey did have a go-to karaoke song. It was a necessity when your best friend was Reggie Rimeblossom. Literally every time he'd persuaded her into singing, Aubrey had picked the same song. I Could Have Danced All Night was short, it was appropriate and Aubrey new the lyrics by heart. It was late in the evening, she'd put it off as long as she could before she let Reggie shoo her up onto the stage in her modest green pinafore dress over a white t-shirt. Her pulse was throbbing in her throat, but Aubrey knew it was nothing more sinister than nerves as she began, "Bed, bed, I couldn't go to bed." Her voice was unremarkable. Not impressive, but not bad enough to attract attention, either.
The first verse and chorus went the way they always did, but when Aubrey reached 'I only know when he began to dance with me' she was suddenly remembering their weekend in Toronto, she and Reggie dancing alone in the street, and all the things she hadn't said and didn't know if she ever would. Her fingers tightened around the microphone, going even paler than they usually were as she made it through to nearly the end of the song. On the last two high notes, her voice faltered in a way it usually didn't, cracking unpleasantly. Everyone applauded anyway, as they had even the worst singers of the night, and Aubrey prised her hand free to give the microphone to the next singer. Instead of going back to Reggie, she made a beeline for the exit, not stopping until she had her back against the outside wall, hand resting on her chest as she tried to feel each breath going in and out.
