RP: Clearing the Air
Who: Eric + Serafina
What: Clearing the Air, First Meeting
When: Wednesday, May 29, 2000
Where: Tarrytown Lighthouse Supe Archive
Warnings: TBD
Completion Status: Complete

”Another time” is what he’d told Gael at Ram’s party when Gael mentioned she was also in attendance and he’d held to that the rest of the night. Basically underwear and a see through dress, and out of respect for Gael’s wishes he truly hadn’t even glanced at Fina the entire night. So why standing outside of the archives did he feel like he was walking into a trap? He’d hurt Gael who’d moved back after massive heartbreak and she was protective. Standing at the doors to the archive he wondered if she was receiving the same information Jani had relayed to him. “I guess that doesn’t matter now,” he mumbled.

He pushed the door open entering a room that looked much like a cross between the reference room of a library with desks at the far end. “Hello?” His voice echoed against the stone walls. Maybe they were on break, or taking a dip? He knew they were selkies but it didn’t make sense that they’d leave the building open while they were swimming in the harbor. He took to perusing the record shelves, would they even have anything about werewolves? He doubted his family would be among the annals if so, but it was worth a look while he waited for someone to return.

After their conversation the night before Fina had put her foot down and said she would spend the day at the archives with Gael. Yes, she had to cry off from a studying session she had planned with some people in the course before their final exam on Friday, but she wanted to be there for her brother. That way he could take breaks when he needed to, and she could study in quiet. She was one of the few regular visitors, so she wasn't expecting anyone else in.

Gael had gone out for a swim in the lake a while back and she had ignored her needs for long enough while reviewing a tricky piece of theory that she eventually had to make a dash for the bathroom. Unfortunately she had forgotten that it would be the time that the boat would be arriving. When she heard the door go she looked at her watch and muttered an oath. The voice said hello too, which meant it wasn't Gael, who would probably have gone with a variation on 'I'm back'.

Finishing her business quickly she called out as she opened the door. "I'm on my way!" she called brightly. She walked quickly from the door tucked away at the far side from the entrance, looking for whoever had decided to come over to the archives.

"Sorry about that," she said, spotting a tall blondish guy looking at some of the shelves as she finished drying off her hands on the back of her jeans. She approached him, a smile on her face even though she was clearly slightly rushed. "Welcome to the archives, I'm not the regular librarian, but I'm familiar with most of where everything is. How can I help you?" she asked.

This was his sister, Fin. A family nickname he'd assumed. Their similarities were uncanny, striking features: dark hair, searching eyes, a similar smile to the one that had drawn him those weeks before at Sunny's. He reminded himself that they'd not met at the party at Gael's request and now he could see why. That night she'd been wearing what Gael had described as 'basically underwear and a see-through dress' and that would not have been good even if their talk over text message might've been sooner and in person. I still should've had that talk in person. He shook the thought from his mind. It would've been harder in person. He would've reached out to comfort him, maybe give him one last kiss. No, he would've hurt Gael more than he knew he already had. All in the name of comforting him.

She wasn't the regular librarian, but did that mean Gael was here? Possibly taking a swim. A tinge of envy bubbled up inside him at how easy their transformations were. He'd have to wait until the next full moon to not feel any of this. "How complete are the archives?" He looked back at the shelves perusing for anything that might look like it was wolf related. "Do they cover the more dangerous supernaturals?" It was different being the dangerous one when you'd taken years of practice to mitigate the danger, but his kind were still seen as uncontrollable, mindless, and hungry.

This wasn't someone she had seen in the archives before, but she was hardly here every day. But the question suggested he wasn't familiar with the space. "The most complete records we have relate to water shifters, particularly selkies, and the local area. But given this is Tarrytown we have a little bit of everything." She gestured around the room. "And at most levels from basic to academic, depending on the topic."

"Dangerous supernaturals, huh?" she asked. "I guess that's a matter of perspective, but we have some things on weres, vampires, demonic entities, which I'd guess are the most commonly thought of as dangerous." She waved a hand out. "Any of that what you're looking for?" It was risky to get too pushy because not all supes were very happy discussing either their own natures or wanted to share what they might be looking up. "You're welcome to just browse, of course," she said. "Unfortunately we are part way through some reorganisation right now, so it's not the clearest archive." Gael had kindly been working on the things she wanted first, which meant the project had taken a slightly unusual path.

"I'm Fina, by the way," she said, holding out her hand to shake his.

He wondered if she was someone that assumed a nature based on the answer. He'd been strict with Gael to only mention 'pack things' and not the more grizzly aspects of himself. "Historical? I'm curious to know if there are any packs that are original to the area." Maybe it could turn into some interesting talk with Craig over beers. He did have a standing invitation one of these days to grill out with his father. While using the term pack didn't exactly leave it as vague as he wanted, it left him with enough cushion to feel comfortable. He was sure she was more protective of her brother than even their mother, he didn't need to be outing himself in the same breath.

He reached for her hand shaking it, "Eric." His answer without pitch wondering how quickly this was going to turn now that she knew his name.

It was an unusual request in her opinion, but at least one she knew how to deal with. "Sure we have a decent historical collection, although the older it is the spottier. But everything pre 50s is mostly still in date order, so you just need to head for the oldest."

The way Fina snatched her hand back was probably some indication of her thoughts. She stared at him, her face thunderous, as she tried to corral her thoughts into order. Something about the tone of his voice confirmed that he was indeed the man who had so recently hurt her brother. Yesterday. Yesterday! She had spent her evening consoling and comforting her brilliant little brother. "Wait. There." she said forcefully, emphasising both words with the precision and clarity of someone who had studied exactly how all of the sounds were produced.

She didn't wait for him to say anything, instead stalking past him with the rapidity and fury of the truly enraged. She snatched up post it notes and a pen from the desk she had been working at and slammed through the door to the locker room. She wrote Eric is HERE very clearly on the top note, pressing rather harder than necessary, ripped it off, and applied it to the locker Gael always used (reserved for the librarian) at roughly eye height. She had no wish for him to come back into the building and be surprised.

She didn't wait until she had crossed the room to start yelling, instead as she opened the door she sucked in a breath and began. "In the name of any and all of the gods, what precisely possessed you to think that today. Today was the day to visit the place where my brother works?" She was striding back towards him, her arms gesturing for emphasis. "You know? The brother who worked out he's not compatible for a potential relationship with you only yesterday!" She ended up back in front of him with her arms crossed over her chest, looking at him expectantly. Shorter she might be, but he was in her territory now.

Yeah, that tracks. Her hands were already busy rifling across the desk for a pen and paper. So Gael was swimming. If had any other way to reach her then he wouldn't have ended up here at his place of work. It was a bad look and he knew it, but somewhere in his infinite wisdom he'd decided that it was at least worth a shot.

He did as she told him, taking the time to look around the building more. A few desks situated in a bullpen style in the center of the room with the shelving settled around the edges. It was a good step up if only a little small. There had to be more to the archives than this, he thought.

She'd returned from what he assumed was leaving Gael a note in case he came back while he was still there. He hoped Gael was taking a nice long swim unsure what would happen if he showed up before he left.

"I didn't come here to see him." He kept his tone even. Regardless of her protective stance, if Gael had decided that they weren't compatible on his own then he was more resilient than he'd given him credit for. And it only made him feel worse. "How long does he usually swim for?" He remembered Gael telling him about his family, about Maria. It wasn't a leap from there to figure out what his nature was.

His calmness really wasn't doing much to subdue Fina's ire. She laughed incredulously. "You didn't come here to see him?! At his place of work. Where he is the only full-time employee. I'm not exactly sure how you think you're going to avoid him." She knew that when the boat dropped people off it didn't wait for more than long enough to check there was nobody coming out again, so Eric was now stuck here unless he wanted to get very wet. "Today?!" she emphasised again.

"How long does he usually- madre de dios, mr fancy paramedic, do you usually take off for a run in the middle of a normal shift? Because that's what you're asking," she remonstrated. "I have no idea how long he's gonna swim for, but the boat has gone so you're stuck here until the end of the day unless you feel like getting really fucking wet!" She threw her hands up in the air. It was times like this that she wished she was a native Spanish speaker because there was something very satisfying about a Spanish rant, but her brain just couldn't keep up with the complexities and she reverted to English, aside from some insults and flair.

Even if he didn't know that she would be here the thought had crossed his mind. Gael had mentioned that she was protective, but her anger burned hotter. "It wouldn't be the first time I've swam it." He was if anything impatient and more he hated feeling trapped in one place. "And I said what I meant. I didn't come here to see him. I can't see him, it's not good for either of us." Was it her anger that was giving rise to his? Or her inability to understand. The jeans he was wearing would definitely get heavier with the water as he swam but would dry out quickly when he got back.

"There's nothing more-". He took a few deep breaths trying to center himself, calm the wolf that was scratching at his temples. "I'm here to see you. His sister, the one I asked him to introduce me to at the party, but backed out because he was worried I'd find you attractive." She was. That was undeniable, but entirely not the point. His shoulder raised towards his ears.

He should just turn around and swim it. He could toss his clothes in the wash when he got back to his apartment. "If anything now, you have a face to hate instead of just a name." He turned back towards the door. This had been an ill conceived mistake of an idea.

When he said he had swum it before she was surprised. Not that many people chose to swim to the lighthouse unless they were water shifters of some kind, hell she sometimes took the boat if she had a lot to bring. Her eyebrow was about to raise to suggest he should be her guest, but then he displayed a modicum of sense. "Score one point for realising seeing him right now would be a bad idea," she said more mildly. "Minus several hundred for coming, and I cannot emphasise this enough," she said, glaring at him. "To his place. of. work." She flung out a hand as if he hadn't noticed his surroundings.

It did temporarily stop her shouting as she was startled into silence when he said he was here to see her. And that Gael wouldn't introduce her before because of that. Which was understandable, especially when she'd been dressed as she was, and before they'd had the conversation about the likelihood she would find a random stranger attractive enough to do something about it at a party. "Why in the fuck did you want to meet me?" she asked incredulously, she didn't care about any potential attraction because all she was feeling towards him was anger and frustration. Plus she'd never do that to Gael. "Because I'm telling you now all this," she said, waving up and down his body. "Is doing fuck all for me. And again, why here and now? Couldn't you wait week, fuck even wait a day? Give everyone some breathing space." The man was infuriating.

She groaned in frustration. He could go and swim for it of course, but that would put him in far closer proximity to Gael. And her brother didn't even hate him. But she really liked the idea of kicking his ass into the lake. "Oh for fuck's sake if you're going to go I'll call the boat back," she relented with ill grace. She wasn't sure Gael would forgive her for kicking him into the lake. They also didn't exactly advertise the fact that they could call the boat back and only really did it in emergencies. Being a responsible adult was bullshit sometimes.

Despite a combination of emotionally exhausting conversations and physically exerting swimming, Gael hadn't slept well. He'd kept rolling over in the night to reread the text messages exchanged with Eric, as if by reading them for the fifth time, he could make them say something different. Even when he'd told himself, firmly, that he was not going to check again, he still had. By morning, he was seriously wondering if he needed to leave his phone at home again, as he'd done to stop him texting Eric about dinner the day after the party.

Somehow, he managed to get through coffee and breakfast with Maria without tipping her off that anything was wrong. After Mama had dashed off, Sefie had appeared, bag already packed, announcing (rather than asking) that she'd be spending her day with him, studying in the archive. Gael had tried to tell her it was fine, that 'work' at the archive was sufficiently unstructured that if he got distracted trying to organise a shelf, it would do no actual harm. But of the two of them, Sefie was definitely more skilled at insisting, so they'd arrived together, Sefie setting herself up with her revision materials while Gael tried to find some subproject that might occupy him. He hadn't left his phone at home, but he did leave it on the desk Sefie was using so he wouldn't check it as often.

The problem with Gael's current job was... it just wasn't very interesting. He liked organising things, when he could really sink into it and focus on it to the exclusion of all else, but the archive was too big to do all in one go the way Gael might reorganise his cookbooks or music collection. Even, sensibly, having decided to focus on records of the fae, Gael just couldn't quite get out of his own head enough. His thoughts kept straying to Eric. Or Marcos. Or the void of the upcoming weeks that was neither Eric nor Marcos that Gael didn't know how to fill. Eventually, just before the lunch boat arrived, Sefie had practically ordered him into the water.

It did help, at least while he was in seal form. The sensory experience of twisting his body through the water was the closest he would ever come to flight, being neither a were-eagle nor a Valkyrie. He had no idea how much time had passed, but he could feel the water chilling as the sun sank lower. The cold never bothered him, but he had enough human mind left to know it meant Sefie would be getting nearer to leaving the archive, and wouldn't want to go without him. So he circled back to the lighthouse, pushing himself up onto the landing jetty and under the covered area before transforming back. Sealskin bundled under his arm, he walked barefoot and naked back into the archive's antechamber. "I'm back," he called, sure Fina would know he'd need a minute before he was decent. It didn't take long to towel off and get his jeans, socks and shirt back on. "Time to go home yet?" he asked, walking through the door to the main tower, having very little idea how long he'd actually been gone.

Since Eric left Serafina had had time to review her actions and she could honestly say she didn't regret any major part of it. Not that she was particularly looking forward to relating any of it to Gael. So she had tried to study. Tried being the operative, because she didn't feel like much of it was going in. Which at this point wasn't surprising, but the fact she couldn't concentrate was a bit of an issue. Hopefully once she'd spoken to Gael she would feel better. And he wouldn't feel worse.

When she heard the outside door open again she glanced at the time and sighed and started to pack up. It was a little bit early but honestly she'd rather leave early. Or at least sit on the jetty with her feet in the water until the boat arrived. "Hey you," she called back to Gael slightly weakly. She didn't bother going through to the locker room, he could get changed in peace and she could try and formulate the right way to bring this up. Not that she hadn't gone through a few variations in her head.

"Honestly not quite, but I'm ready to be done and the boat won't be long," she said. She took a breath. "And, erm, you'll need to tell mama to add an emergency pick-up fee to the payment for this month," she said. She gave a slightly crunched up and guilty smile to him. Start with the practical, that would help, right?

"We can wait out-" Gael stopped midsentence as he processed the words. "Wait, what? What happened?" His first thought was some kind of medical emergency, that someone who'd come on the lunch boat had been taken so ill they'd needed to return to land ASAP. He felt an immediate wave of guilt that he'd left Sefie to handle it by herself. Not that she wasn't perfectly capable, but simply because it wasn't her job, and she was supposed to be studying for her exams. "I'm sorry, Sefie," he offered genuinely. Clearly, he shouldn't have abandoned his post, no matter how much the swim had helped return the storm of emotions to the the back of Gael's mind for the moment.

As for the fee, he waved that away. Of course, Mama would take care of that, if it had been a genuine emergency.

Having entirely forgotten the normal reason someone might need and an emergency boat out in the face of the actual events of the afternoon Sefie's eyes widened. "Oh, no. No medical emergency!" she said hurriedly.

She winced and cringed, looking at him. "So you know how you didn't want me to come to the dinner party because I'd end up arguing with Eric? Probably the right decision with how much I yelled when he showed up on the lunchtime boat." She knew her wording was all her prevaricating to try and keep the tone light. She opened her mouth to apologise to Gael, but couldn't bring herself to actually do it.

Sefie's question wasn't entirely accurate, so Gael frowned. "I don't want you to come to the dinner party because you'll be upset." He paused, but felt duty-bound to admit, "And because you'd argue with Eric and then he'd be..." Gael probably didn't actually know Eric well enough to know whether Sefie's arguing would upset him. Did he take things that personally? "He wouldn't deserve it," he settled on, since regardless of how Eric might feel, that part was true.

Maybe that had been the wrong thing to say, given Sefie's next comment, which felt like a sharp shove into cold water. "He was here?" He glanced around, as if expecting to find Eric standing by one of the bookshelves. Except, of course, he wasn't, because Sefie had already said he'd got the emergency boat back. "Why?" Had he changed his mind after all, come to fix things in person? And instead, Gael hadn't even been here and Sefie had yelled at him? "You sent him away?" What if he'd wanted to talk?

Re: Post-Eric

Honestly Sefie didn't think upset and angry were necessarily needing to be separate reactions to the dinner party idea, but she didn't feel the need to point that out. And the idea that he wouldn't deserve it... well now she wasn't sure about that no matter how moronic his actions were today. She was still mad at him for hurting Gael, no matter how unintentional, and his actions today hadn't earned him much by way of favours either. "You certainly wouldn't deserve your party ruined," she settled on, it being about the only thing she felt she could say without lying to him on the topic.

She almost couldn't look at Gael and she winced at what seemed to be maybe excitement in his voice. "He was here," she confirmed. "And in the end I didn't send him away, he chose to go," she said. She struggled for words for a second, no matter how much she'd been rehearsing this conversation she had known it wouldn't survive putting it into action. "I'm not totally clear on why he came here today." Besides being a moron. "What he said was that he was here to see me, not you. And also something about compulsion thing he wanted to look up," she said. She still thought Eric's timing was frankly abominable and there were many other ways he might have tried to contact her if he'd thought about it, but she was trying not to overly insult him to Gael, given how generous Gael still seemed to feel about the man.

Gael hadn't really thought Sefie's presence would ruin the dinner party. Even if she'd endured her anger in silence and not said anything at all to Eric, that just wasn't a situation he had any need or desire to put her through. Though, if what she was saying was true, maybe he should have been more worried. "How much did you yell at him?" he asked, apprehensively. "And why?" He made a gesture, knowing that the answer was 'because he hurt you', but also not convinced that required yelling when it had been accidental. "It's as much my fault as his, and you didn't yell at me."

The answer, that Eric had come to see Sefie, was baffling enough to momentarily distract Gael from the disappointment that he hadn't been the reason for the visit. He waved away the suggestion that he'd come in for research purposes. As son of the pack master, it really couldn't be that hard for Eric to discover which days Gael didn't work, if he had legitimate archive business. "He came to see you?" Again, the only question Gael could think to ask was, "Why?" Sefie had said she didn't know an Eric, and Eric hadn't recognised Fina's name, so what could they even have to say to one another?

"Err," Sefie said, scratching her head and looking away from Gael. She sighed and looked back at him, still wincing. "Yeah, okay I yelled a fair bit. Especially at the start." When he asked why she had yelled she fixed him with a look that said she was fairly sure he knew the answer to that. "Because he hurt you, but more than that because he did that and then showed up at your workplace the next day," she said. "Gael, you didn't communicate as well as you could have and that hurt you. Hell, I probably wouldn't have yelled at him as much for that if it had been down the line. But the day after? Yeah I yelled," she said, ending defiantly.

With a grimace Sefie had to admit she didn't really have an answer. "I still don't really know. He sort of brushed that away when I didn't stop yelling at him immediately." She could see now that it might have been useful information, but at the time she was still raging at Eric's idiocy in coming to the archive and hadn't especially cared. She tried to think if there had been more details, but the majority of those seemed to have been subsumed by anger.

'Deserve' is a matter of opinion when it comes to family.

I expected to see you.

Not entirely, I introduced myself and it kind of snowballed when she heard my name. I recently discovered something that I needed references for. Since you weren't there I figured I'd ask her.

In hindsight I should've given a fake name. 😂

Shouldn't I decide She'd agree with you there. Just know she formed that opinion independent of how I explained things.

Did you change your mind? Not entirely, but partly?

I'd say sorry I wasn't, but you and me and Sefie might've been worse. I'm there alone Frid

I know. She told me as much.

I'm not interested in your sister, Gael. I wanted to tell her my side, maybe save you from feeling like she needed to look after you again. You don't need someone to look after you every time something happens. I obviously didn't get the chance at a civil conversation and again that's my fault.

I'm not in the habit of pitting siblings against each other or putting someone in a position where they would need to choose that. It would've been much worse.

Oh. Good. Her version didn't give that impression.

I didn't think you were! She said you went to see her, and you said you didn't, so I wondered if you didn't want to tell her you came to see me asked.

She needs to look after me a bit. You don't need to look after me, either, Eric.
...
But I like that you tried. You're going to be a good friend.

I've got practice being the peacekeeper between Mama and Sefie. You're a slightly less intimidating prospect.

I know, at least I think I do.

I was worried I'd hurt you more in the process, if I said I came to see you.
...

That's good.
...
Are you ready for us to be friends?
