The trouble with winter was that Ram's usual go-to of spending time in the garden was far less appealing when said garden was either covered in a layer of snow, sodden with rain or cracking with patches of dark ice. He hadn't been stress baking. He definitely hadn't been stress experimenting with different ways to make bagels look less boring. And yet, despite the total lack of stress (who was Ram kidding?), he woke up Sunday morning with trays full of bagels and nothing particular to do. At least for now, the house still felt too empty, though Ram was beginning to wonder whether 'empty' was better or worse than 'full of people Ram had to try to pretend not to be a dick himself around'. Either way, it wasn't the place he wanted to be.

So he packed everything up into bags and baskets and wobbled his way to the community centre, hoping his forum post would get enough attention that he didn't have to load the bike quite so precariously on his way back. He found himself some tables to display on, plus a chair. Sitting behind his sketchbook, he wasn't really drawing, more people-watching in the hope that a friend would show up soon. The first person to come closest to that aspiration was a bartender Ram recognised from Sunny's. Ram eagerly sat up and started waving him over. "Are you too healthy for bagels?" He had a vague recollection that they'd talked about working out. Or rather, talked about how Ram definitely didn't.

He scoffed. Despite his ill-advised attempt to talk his way into a personal trainer at a local gym Gareth made no more arguments that he was healthy. His current physique was a mixture of working far too many hours at the bar and constantly at his feet. Besides, his conversation with Mal about his parent's farm had put on a month's worth of craving pancakes and anything he could slather in maple syrup. Mal was probably sick of it, but Gareth's sweet tooth couldn't be denied.

"Definitely not too healthy." Looking over the offerings he tried not to give voice compared to bagels he'd had in the city. Not everyone wanted a hunk of bread with three inches of cream cheese in the middle. They were wrong, but he didn't need to know that when there was obvious effort put into the baking. "Cream cheese?" Gareth asked plucking a white bagel sporting delicately appliquéd fern fronds in it.

"Oh, good!" People were much more likely to stop and chat if they actually ate a bagel rather than just admiring them on their way past. Nodding, he reached into his bag for what was left of the cream cheese he'd bought yesterday. "I think friends are coming with more, but I'm not sure when they'll get here." Both Heidi and Bea had offered to bring fillings, so they'd probably end up with more than they needed; it was better than trying to eat the bagels plain.

Handing over the cream cheese, Ram asked, "Good weekend? Were you working last night?" Ram hadn't been in, instead spending the evening rattling around his nearly-empty house until he'd come up with the bright idea to make use of the community centre the next day.

Gareth picked up a cat-shaped bagel testing the wait of it. "It's almost too delicate to cut open." It reminded him of the feral cats that ran around his parents's farm. Still, there was a grumbling in his stomach and after a late night at Sunny's he had decidedly skipped breakfast.

"Every night's a late night at Sunny's but a stellar weekend." He'd forgotten that there was a number he had to reach to move on from here to the next town. Dorrett had to do a lot with that though he couldn't remember if it was because she might actually cause him physical harm if he told he was moving on. Then there was Mal to think about, he had a roommate now and that meant not footing someone else with his portion of the rent. He contorted his face thinking about it. The idea of roots started making him itchy.

Taking that as a compliment to his artistic-baking skills, Ram grinned as a flush spread across his cheeks. "If you can eat gummy bears, I'm sure you can cope." Ram did remember as a child having a moment of conscience about eating the heads of adorable gummy sweets, before deciding that he wasn't a vegetarian and also that candy was delicious.

Something in the words, or maybe the expression, made that sound less than 100 per cent positive and Ram frowned. "I don't like when every night's the same, I get bored." Which was why Ram had a million different hobbies that he picked up and discarded. "At least today has unexpected cat bagels? I bet we can add more unexpected things."

"Was never a fan of gummy bears." Plucking a knife from the table. The small pleased expression on the bagel's face still intact as he smears cream cheese on the interior before placing it back together. The bread had a spring to it, light and airy.

He let a smirk cross his face wondering if Ram had worked in a bar before. "It's never the same night." There was a tang to the cream cheese in his bite, and the bread was delicious.

Laughing, Ram objected, "Now you're just being difficult! What's wrong with gummy bears?" Maybe Gareth was a vegetarian? Ram didn't really know him well enough to be sure. "What candy do you prefer, then?"

That definitely sounded better, so Ram nodded. "Do you get to listen to all the stand-up comedy?" He could imagine that made the job pretty interesting, as well as getting to witness things like people making connections and going on first dates and even sometimes breaking up. It was something Ram enjoyed about tattooing, too, getting to hear little pieces of people's life stories. Not everyone, of course, some tattoos were purely for aesthetic appreciation, but enough that Ram enjoyed when people told him the significance behind the ink they wanted.

Please raid your fridge! Is it Is it weird living with just Rashmi?

Does dressing for the bagels mean a sweater with flowers? If so, why don't you always wear that when you see me??

Done. And yes, obviously. At least Dagny still visits when she's not busy being loved up.

Maybe. There might also be jeans. And I'm borrowing Rashmi's cat ears for fun.

What do you do when it gets too weird?

I donated a bunch of my old clothes in January. We should go thrifting and see if we can find me flowery sweaters and jeans! Unless you want to just donate me yours directly when you get bored of them.

Fly for a bit and text her?

The sweaters are all mine, hands off. But we could go thrifting. Craft fairs are also good, but not cheap.

Damn my lack of wings.

Cheap is good, and recycling is good. Let's go thrifting and you can find me something snazzy.

Yeah, sorry. It's my answer to a lot of stress things. That or derby or climbing. Anything movement.

Sure thing. We can pick a date when I get down to the community centre. You can sweet talk me into showing you the really good places with carbs, pretty and tasty carbs.

I've tried cycling, I don't think movement is my solution. I'm not sure how to work out what is. Other than sex, but if Joe's here it's already not a problem.

I will warn you now, they pretty much just taste like bagels.

Yeah movement is a me thing. Sex would work too, but right now I have have for sure is is BOB.

There is such a thing as bad bagels though. I'm New Yorker enough to have opinions.

I could try that, but I don't think it'd be the same. Do you think I could learn an instrument?

They're not bad! Just more interesting on the outside than on the inside. But your fridge might help with that.

I'm not sure which one you're suggesting you try. I don't need to know I mean you can try. I think some of them need a teacher more than others.

I do enjoy a pretty outside though. And yes. I can at least bring some cheese, some cold cuts, and a few condiments. Gotta ask Rashmi before I steal too much salad though.

I wouldn't mind a teacher, if I could afford them. I guess the more improbable the instrument, the more expensive the lessons.

I imagine the condiments in your fridge are plenty exciting, with or without salad.

I'd guess so too. All the things I've tried are pretty standard.

Sure. But Rashmi is a constant reminder that some people like salad.

Several, but I'll make sure I leave some too.

Right, stopping texting so I can get in the van. See you soon!
