Dear Jack,
I've been settling into the dorms here pretty well so far. My roommate, Sophia, has been a fount of information, mostly social things, and she's also quite the reader. She's been kind enough to share her personal library with me, though she tends to collect romance novels that are far more modern than Pride and Prejudice. I haven't read any of those ones yetbut at least now I have an idea of what to expect in them.
Something happened earlier this week that was a bit shocking. Apparently it's well known in college dorms that if your roommate ties an article of clothing to the door handle, it means they've got company and don't come in. I didn't know that. I thought she put the scarf on the door handle because it was a pretty decoration.I walked in on her and her boyfriend having sexDid you know that was a thing? Is that something you do?Sophia was really apologetic for not realizing I wouldn't know what it meant, and she made sure to get me lots of reading material on the subject, so I don't feel quite asignorantout of the loop as I did.
But I hadn't told her how I was raised. It turns out she already knew. And it turns out I know her boyfriend. Malachi was part of my commune but he was kicked out when it was discovered he was a witch. His mom and sister were able to stay because they apparently didn't have any magic, but it was still quite the scandal. I never really understood how they could stay when Malachi was kicked out, but it wasn't my place to judge. Mal's sister, Felicity, was the one who got married near the start of summer, the wedding my family went to that made my parents finally nudge me about my own impending nuptials.
By the way, Mal told me that things are not as they seemed in the commune. He didn't go into details, but he seemed really glad I wasn't there anymore. He told me that he found out I left through Joshua Vance, so if you ever need to interact with the community again, he'd be the one to subtly talk to. He's the one Felicity married, by the way, and Mal said they're part of the internal resistance, or something like that. So Josh told Mal, and I guess Mal found out I was going to be coming here for college, so he and Sophia arranged for her to be my roommate. I didn't even know that was possible, or that I had anyone on the outside who would want to connect like this. But I guess Sophia helped Mal work through a lot of his residualcultcommunetrauma from all of that, so he thought she'd be good for me too.
I'm really enjoying my classes so far, even if it feels like I'm terribly behind. Math has been difficult, but I got my first English assignment back just yesterday with some really positive notes from my professor!I miss youI hope you'll get to visit soon!
Fondly,
Simone
