The early morning light danced over the gentle flow of water lapping at the shore. It was serene, even if it wasn't enough to calm her thoughts or ease that relentless faint itching under her skin. It didn't seem like many people were out yet, which suited her fine. Jani wasn't sure she was ready for socializing just yet. Social took energy that she just wasn't sure she had yet.
Which was probably why she was so startled when some dude approached her and asked if she was okay. She'd expected that sort of thing in Denver, but not outside New York City, which had a major cold shoulder reputation. But maybe Tarrytown was different. Maybe it was a little pocket of 'give a fuck' that the city didn't have. Her second that was that he was built, though her side twinged a bit at the thought, as if reminding her that men were trouble and she didn't come her to get mixed up with anyone. Ben had ruined her life; she was here to rebuild something from the ashes.
