WHO: Daphne & OPEN WHEN: May 16th, noon WHERE: close to Ditko Messenger Service WHAT: Daphne is lunching and stressing RATING: pg13?
Daphne's first shift was half over. She had walked most of it, only jogging now and again. And as much as she didn't want to, Daphne kept herself from running. She was already tired of walking everywhere. She couldn't imagine biking would be much more fun. But at least she had a job. She was working and Matt didn't have to worry so much about quitting his job. Plus it was an under-the-table kind of job. No taxes. No proof that she even existed. That way if her theft record ever caught up with her... well, she didn't really want to think about that.
So it was lunchtime. And with the little bit of tips she'd already gotten, Daphne managed to have enough for a decent meal. She was used to eating posh on patios in Paris. Some little greasy New York City cafe was a far cry from that. But it was all worth it. She got soup and salad and a coke and found a seat out on the sidewalk. This was a fair trade for being with Matt. He was better than she deserved, that was not even debatable. Although she knew he would argue that she was too good for him.
Of course that didn't stop her nerves from flaring up this weekend. He wanted her to meet Molly. The Molly that she was supposed to mother. Maybe not now, maybe not in this timeline, but in some future she had been this girl's mother. And, sure, lots of women Daphne's age had a handful of kids already. Most were single mother's with no support from their babies daddies. But Daphne wasn't so sure she was cut out to be a mom. What if she screwed it up? What if Molly didn't like her? There was so much that could go so horribly wrong so quickly in this situation.
Lost in thought, Daphne didn't even realize her hands were moving faster than normal. That is, until she knocked her soda all over her pants. Fantastic. Just what she needed on her first day. And if she ran home to change now Matt would be there and be upset. Daphne grumbled some impolite words to herself as she wiped at her jeans with a napkin. Reaching up to find that, unlike most places, this place happened to only give you one napkin. One? Who only used one napkin?
