Spotting Niki and Jessica up the street, Nathan turned his bike towards them. As he pedaled closer, he found Jessica's boyfriend also there. He hadn't seen the other boy because he was sitting on the curb, leaning against the fire hydrant.
Niki was the first to see him coming. Acknowledging him with a bob of her head, she continued to half-ass listen to what D.L. was saying. "Sounds about right."
"That's what I told Linderman, but the fuck head don't listen to me!" Raising his bottle of Coke, D.L. put it to his lips and curled his tongue up inside the plastic jug. Making sure Jessica was watching, he wiggled his eyebrows.
Niki snorted in disgust. "Nathan!" She waved said teen over, making it clear she preferred to talk to him over D.L.'s bitching.
Coming up beside them, Nathan put his foot down and skidded the back tire of his bike to a halt. "Hey, guys."
"Hi." Smiling at Nathan over her sister's shoulder Jessica waved at him. When she caught D.L.'s scowl, she giggled and looked away quickly.
"Hey, man." D.L. raised his bottle in salute, but otherwise didn't acknowledge Nathan.
"Anyone seen Peter?" His question was for all of them, but Nathan's focus was on Niki. "My mother left my bedroom window open when she was snooping today, and he got out."
"Again?" Snorting, D.L. dropped his bottle to the ground beside him. Fingering the cap, he glanced up at Nathan, squinting from the sunlight. "That's the third time this month. You sure that cat even likes you?"
"He's mine." Gritting his jaw, Nathan ignored D.L.'s look. There was something more important to do than fighting with him again. "He's a house cat, being on the streets isn't good for him."
"Not especially since Mrs. Grey's pussy's out again." Niki dodged Jessica's elbow to her ribs. Shoving her sister by the shoulder, she snickered at the other girl.
"That's one mean Tom." D.L. chuckled at Nathan's dismayed expression. There were times when he actively enjoyed having to live in the white bread neighborhood. Especially when the jokes were at Petrelli's expense. "I heard it attack Parkman and Suresh's little shitzu last night. That was one ugly little bitch before, but damn, that dog was messed up after."
"A shitzu? You're kidding, right?" At D.L.'s head shake, Jessica started to giggle again. "Why don't they just get matching sweaters and pick a date already?"
"Aw, but that's not nice." Holding up one finger, Niki scrubbed the tip of her other over it. "For shame! What would mom think of you teasing 'the resident queers'?" She finished with air quotes.
Groaning, Nathan kicked a rock across the street. "Can we please focus here? My cat's gone missing and I need to get him back in the house before Sylar finds him."
"Speaking of which." Having been about to take another swallow of his Coke, D.L. used the bottle to point further down the block. "There's the black son of a bitch now."
"Peter?" Nathan followed where the other boy was pointing. Instead of his long-haired Persian, there was a short-haired tabby poking its head under a bush, tail twitching. As he watched, Mrs. Grey's cat crawled under the bush.
"I wonder what kinda prey he's got himself this time? Since that's Noah's place, you think his cat's in heat?" A second after Niki spoke, a high pitch screech echoed down the block. Sharing a grin with D.L., she crinkled her nose. "And he strikes again! Who do you think will drop a load of kittens over this first, Claire or Noah?"
Shaking his head, Nathan continued to watch the bush. "It won't happen. Noah had Claire fixed at the same time I had Peter neutered." The screech came again and Nathan climbed off his bike. It was barely on the curb before he was taking off. "That's Peter!"
Sharing a confused expression with her sister, Jessica shrugged and dragged her along after Nathan. If there was going to be trouble, she wanted front row seats.
Pounding down the street, Nathan could hear the others giving chase. It didn't matter, though, he had to get to Peter before anything else happened to him. Rushing up on to the sidewalk, he jumped over the lawn gnome in front of Noah's house.
The bushes were to either side of the front porch. Sylar had gone under the ones under the front window.
Crashing to the a halt outside the bushes, Nathan fell to his knees. He reached out and started to push aside the bushes. "Peter!" Not finding anything in the first section, he moved to the next two bushes. There, he heard growling. Quickly pushing them aside, he froze at what he saw.
By that time, Niki and Jessica had caught up to Nathan. Seeing what he had revealed by pushing aside the bushes, Niki tried to snort, but didn't have enough breath. Beside her, Jessica gasped in shock.
Finally making it, D.L. had to bend over his knees to catch his breath. As he gasped for air, he leaned on Nathan's shoulder, pushing the girls aside. Seeing the two cats, he barked, then gave a hit pitched whine. A second later, he was huffing with laughter.
Knocked in to action from his shock, Nathan leaned forward and did the first thing that came to mind. He grabbed Sylar by the tail and pulled him off.
Peter screeched as Sylar was forced from his body. Rolling over, he groaned and rubbed his ass against the ground.
That was enough to set Jessica off. Shrieking with laughter, she tried to clutch at her sister, but Niki was faring no better.
Interrupted mid coitus, Sylar turned on the creature holding his tail. With a growl, he swiped at Nathan's hand.
"Ow! Son of a bitch!" Letting the Tabby go, he stuck his injured fingers in his mouth.
Sylar glanced the humans over before fluffing up his fur and hissing at them.
That was more than enough for Nathan. With his good one, he backhanded the Tabby out of the bushes. "Get the hell away from my cat!" Snatching up the still rubbing Peter by the scruff of his neck, Nathan held the cat against his chest. "Did that monster hurt you?"
Peter started to purr, rubbing against Nathan now.
"I know. It's over now, that bastard won't hurt you again." Scrubbing Peter under his jaw, Nathan had to do a balancing act so he could stand up. On his feet, he took in the sight of the still gasping others and glared. He pushed passed them, heading for his bike. If they thought his cat being raped by that monster was funny, they could all go to hell.
Head peeking over Nathan's shoulder, Peter scanned the grounds.
From under another bush, dark eyes watched the long-haired Persian as he was carried away.
