Of all the things Hiro expected to see in the world, this was not one of them. Cringing back against the stone wall, he fought to bring his breathing under control. Despite the sword clutched in his hands, if he did not manage even that, all would be lost.
The castle around him rumbled. The dragon was definitely angry.
He wasn't exactly sure how he had gotten to this point. It should have been a quick jump to the twelfth century. The most he should have had to worry about was plague and vermin.
There were not supposed to be actual dragons!
The dragon shook the castle again, bellowing it's rage. An explosion of fire singed the stones at the entrance to his hiding spot. Stones and masonry exploded under the intense blaze.
Clenching his eyes shut, he lowered his face to keep the dust out of them. The heat would increase for another minute more, then he would have to make his move. There came a scraping of the stones behind him. His heart actually stopped.
Back ramrod straight, he turned around. He opened his left eye only a little to peer about. Hiro instantly regretted it. The front of his pants were now wet as he shook. "Kuso-suru."
There was another one.
It searched his hiding spot with an impossibly large eye. Then, it spotted him. Tongue out, the second dragon's muzzle surged forward. With a growl, its jaws snapped shut.
Screaming, Hiro let the beast eat his sword. He closed his eyes and blinked. In the next moment, he was gone.
Left with only the metal poker, the dragon screamed in rage.
