Ice had lived through dozens of summers, in half a dozen different places, but the patterns were nearly always the same. It always seemed to spike hottest near the end of July, maintaining elevated temperatures that broke somewhere in the middle of September. There were variances, of course, but in general that was the trend she'd noticed. It wasn't nearly as bad down by the shore, and it never got quite so hot up in the mountains, but she still didn't like the heat. It made it hard to sleep, and it made her restless. The attitude around town wasn't helping the restlessness, either. There was an underlying tension she could feel any time she walked through a crowd. A level of suspicion that hadn't existed before the official announcement. It was fading, but too slowly for her liking. It didn't matter now though ... there was no one in the immediate area. No crowds, though when the wind blew the right way, noises from the tavern carried very faintly on the breeze. Perched on a large boulder at the side of the road, Ice had tipped her head back to regard the sky. The night was amazingly clear and the stars dotted the sky with only the hint of a moon to add light. It was nearly perfect, and she smiled a contented smile. She couldn't imagine anyone bothering her at this hour, but she was in a relatively agreeable mood if someone did. |
