There were always things that distracted the wandering minds of youth, and the influx of new students because of the reopening of the magic wing was one such distraction. She'd noticed a decline in the skills of even some of her best students, but she hadn't quite pinpointed the cause of it until she'd noticed them watching a group of robe-clad teens and pre-teens while they were waiting for their turn to spar. She supposed she should have seen that coming. The magic teachers weren't enforcing any sort of dress code, but she knew at least some of them had taken to wearing robes. So of course some of the students were following their examples. Robes were unusual attire, especially among those taking the military track, so seeing robe-clad individuals was surely cause for distraction. Upon realizing she'd get nothing more productive out of her last class of the day, Ariana had dismissed them with a few parting words about attention spans and how it could spell the difference between a wound and death. Once they'd all scattered off on their own ways (some of them, she noticed, giving the robed individuals a wide berth), she'd sought out some of the soldiers to spar with. Ariana had been fortunate enough to find a decent partner who was studying short blades as well, so it was a lesson as much as it was a workout, and she thought both of them ended the match happy. The soldier had a few new tricks to practice, and Ariana had had a work out. Seated now on one of the benches, she sipped water from one of the tin cups they kept near the water pump, watching what she could see of the grounds between the palace and the Academy. There were more people here, and she was very interested in getting to know some of them ... but she was in no rush. She tipped her chin, hazel eyes regarding the sky and the clouds rolling in. It was going to rain tonight, like as not, but she hoped it held off until after dark. |
