"Will!" The illusionist turned towards the familiar face and smiled. "Lord Silver." "Ah, Will, how many times do I need to tell you? Please, call me Alric." It was true; Will had been told often enough, but each and every time he 'forgot' and called the older man by his noble title, he could see the way Alric puffed up with pride. "Of course, Alric. How are you this evening?" Will asked, letting his easy smile slip some as the noble's expression fell. He watched Alric glance left and then right before the man gestured for them to walk together. Curious, Will fell into step. "Times are grim, my boy. Magic returning to the Academy," Alric shook his head, his upper lip curling slightly in an expression of distaste. "It's times like these that we find out who our true friends are, who can help us to become better men. Do we understand each other?" "We do, my lord," Will replied carefully, the tightening in his shoulders so subtle that the noble didn't notice. "Your uncle was a good man. A respected man. Lowly born, yes, but he made a name for himself here and it's a shame to see you wasting it. A tavern is no place for you," he shook his head and then as if he just remembered something else unpleasant, he asked, "Are you still bedding the stable girl?" Alric had paused, Will stopping beside him. They were in a quieter part of town and at this point, nothing was being said that wasn't common knowledge or couldn't be written off as a concerned elder giving a lecture. "Now and again. You know how it goes," he answered, cocking his head to one side, a laugh in his voice as he shrugged. It had its desired affect and Alric laughed and returned the look with a knowing one of his own. "I do remember how that goes," he admitted before he reached out to clap the younger man on his shoulder. "But it's time you lived up to your potential." Unsure how all of this tied together with the obvious disapproval Alric had shown towards magic, Will focused on his curiosity, for the moment attempting to drown out the rage that made his fingers twitch ever so slightly with the desire to wring the man's throat. It was almost impressive how the noble had managed to insult just about every aspect of Will’s life in such a brief amount of time. “Come to my estate for lunch on Friday. We can discuss your future and the future of Highlyn,” Alric went on, leaving Will to repress a sigh at discovering he’d have to wait to have his curiosity sated. |
