People shifted away from them automatically; as if they were magnets, but the opposites didn't attract, repelling all the others instead. If this was hell, it certainly didn't feel like it at the moment, at least not between the two of them. Elena settled a hand on his shoulder and took his other in her cold, pale fingers. Slowly, but in time with the beat, the brunette led, shifting hers hips perfectly with the song. She couldn't remember the last time she'd danced with Tyler Lockwood. Maybe it had been at one of those awkward junior high dances? It would make sense. After that, she'd pretty much been Matt's girl and the majority of the time, Elena danced with the quarterback. After that? It'd been Stefan and Damon mostly. By that time, Tyler was with Caroline and his attention was obviously and rightfully focused elsewhere.
Now, none of those people or factors seemed to apply anymore, did they? Caroline was with Klaus; Damon and Stefan were somewhere. Matt wasn't around. It was just them. Just Tyler and Elena. Two people who'd never thought they'd end up as anything, but the awkward dance partners they might have been so many years ago as adolescents. Everything changed though and now, somehow, they fit in ways they had never fit before. It was comforting, strangely when she knew she should have been alarmed. When her emotions were flipped, it was fun playing with him, pushing his big, obvious buttons, but that wasn't the case anymore, was it?
She knew he felt it too; the way he looked at her with his bottomless dark eyes. Maybe he'd been out for all the good intentions in the world at the start of all of this, but it wasn't like that anymore. She felt it, the way he held her hand, pulled her close, and took a small breath. She heard it in his heart beat, rattling around wildly in his chest. If Elena had been human, she'd have felt a lot like him right then. They'd always been friends somewhat; the truth was? Tyler and Elena just couldn't be friends anymore. The vampire squeezed his hand.
"I am, am I?" she replied, a bit of surprise evident in her voice. "Maybe I have plans." She didn't and even if she did, she probably would have foregone all of them in favor of being with him. In the moment when emotions were coming down on her in droplets and trickles, he kept her focused.
