Steve had gone to bed fretfully, until the coma-like sleep took him. He'd sent just one last message to Bucky, knowing how badly his friend was hurting and fearing what was about to happen. A simple line. "I'll find you.
Then he'd gone to sleep, expecting to wake back up in the cold harshness of the tundra he'd been plucked from.
Instead, Monday morning, he opened his eyes and saw... his Hotel room's ceiling.
Steve sat upright with a bolt, breathing hard already. He looked around. Everything was the way it had been for his first two weeks here, the 'normal' décor. His wardrobe, the furniture. The picture of Peggy was gone.
He looked over, noting Doc, then felt a lurch as confusion and panic took him. Grabbing his PDA he frantically sent Bucky another message. This made no sense. They'd been told they were leaving, that they were going home. But he couldn't remember going back to Earth for even a moment. Perhaps... perhaps something had kept him here, changed its mind? Had it changed its mind about Bucky, too?
As soon as he sent the message and didn't immediately receive one back upon the confirmation screen flashing, he leapt out of bed. Too slow. Way too slow to wait for a reply.
Not bothering with clothes and still in his blue uniform, Steve tore out of his room and started to sprint down the halls as fast as he could. Only one thought was lodged in his mind.
What if they sent Bucky back without him? What if his friend was, now, waking up with his memory wiped, alone on the entire planet of Earth? If Steve wasn't there to find him, if he was just being hunted instead of having the only man in the world who simply wanted to find him?
If that had happened, he would find Michael, or do another séance, or start tearing the hotel down around him with his bare hands if he had to. He would force them to send him back. As many weeks as it took. Bucky being lost on Earth without Steve looking for him was unacceptable.
His footsteps pounded on the floor as he ran, but he couldn't hear them above the pounding in his ears. He had to find out, had to make sure Bucky was still here. If he couldn't... no. He would find out, first. Now.
