To the students and faculty of Crescent Hill Academy:
It has come to my attention that, in the wake of the recent US presidential election, there has been some concern about the future of this country, and the man elected to lead it. Some of you have come directly to me to ask my opinion on the matter, as more and more, parallels are being drawn between Mister Trump and Adolf Hitler.
As some of you may be aware, I lived through Hitler’s rule. I lived in Paris during its occupation, and gave my life fighting for a France free of Nazi rule. I suppose this makes me uniquely qualified to speak on the matter.
First and foremost, I wish to reassure you that Mister Trump and Hitler are not entirely the same. Both may be power-hungry megalomaniacs with unprecedented inferiority complexes, but only one of them had an unquestionable desire for genocide. Mister Trump may be a racist, misogynist, and xenophobe of extraordinary renown, but I do not see in him the capacity for mass murder. For all the other ways in which he has been happy to flagrantly abuse civil rights and liberties, I greatly doubt that he has the stomach for murder, despite his off-color jokes.
Mister Trump also lacks the breathtaking systematic planning of Hitler. He seems to be allergic to schedules and strategy, and while this has thus far worked for him, in a bureaucracy the size of the United States, he will be hard pressed to take any type of drastic action. What little he does manage to achieve will likely be challenged at every level of the system designed to keep men like him in check, if not out of power altogether.
Most importantly - and perhaps shockingly - the saner people in this country are actually learning from lessons past. There have already been protests, and I have no doubt that this resistance shall continue to grow as Mister Trump begins his time in office. (Let us pray that he is limited to one term only, and that he avoids launching any nuclear weapons in that timeframe.)
Your country shall endure whatever comes, just as mine did. By the grace of God, you will come out on the other side relatively unscathed. But should the situation devolve, should those who do have similar agendas and strategies to Hitler gain undue influence, know this: I gave my life for La Résistance, and I would do so again in a heartbeat.
If you should still feel the need for reassurance, or simply need a quiet space, know that the library is always available to you. Crescent Hill Academy is meant to be a safe place for you, and I am dedicated to preserving that ideal.
