Had Emma been disappointed that Joseph's original plans for her birthday had fallen through? Yes, there was no getting around that. But, after Tyler had been born, she quickly learned that her life wasn't entirely her own anymore. Sacrifices, like her birthdays, had to be made. In fact, until she'd starting seeing the writer, Emma couldn't recall any of her birthdays being celebrated in Havenwood aside from all of Tylers. This year, like every year, her birthday ended up just being another day of work. After the scare of those rash of murders two years ago, the department had become more thorough in it's investigations of any suspicious deaths. But, after inspecting the scene, Emma had found evidence that the death of the elderly couple was due to a ghost. Judging from the viscous fluid found near their bodies, a particularly nasty one that had probably possessed the pair. Officially, she wrote the case off as an accident and kicked it up to Jame Whitaker, one of the local hunters in the area. And that was that.
Then, it was Joseph's turn to get sucked into work and she couldn't fault him that; Just look at her track record, after all. Then the chaos of school came next along with all the extracurriculars that went with it and Emma helping Ana with her Taw Kwon Do... It nearly turned her head to think that it was already October. Where had 2016 gone? But, really, Emma was not complaining one bit. This was exactly the kind of life she wanted her son to have; Days of fun, days of homework, days spent learning about why the sky was blue and the grass was green. Not days spent learning how to break a person arm three different ways. Not reading the best ways to torture a werewolf for information for as long as possible before killing them. She got to hear how Tyler wanted to be a writer like Joseph instead of hearing how he wanted to kick butt like Brent and be the best hunter the Order had ever seen. Emma was exactly where she wanted to be and at the moment, it was being greeted by a man who was trying very damn hard to be the best father figure he could be.
It was that, the extra gleam in his eye, and Joseph's slight ramble that made her smile back. Yet, Emma being Emma knew that meant he was up to something which was slightly annoying and oh-so-endearing and it showed on her face as she stepped inside to look suspiciously at him.
"You," she started with a pointing of a finger in his general direction, "are up to something..." Emma comically narrowed her eyes for a beat before her annoyed expression turned to something more amused and flirty as she stepped up to the writer, "Which I will get to the bottom of, but first..." She rose onto the balls of her feet, her palms coming into contact with his sweater as she planted a kiss on Joseph's mouth before pulling away a moment later.
Through the thin, but soft material of his sweater, Emma could just barely feel the rapid pounding of Joseph's heart and made her smile back at him more. She was nervous to have an entire evening alone with Joseph and it seemed that maybe he felt a little of the same, which might be why he was acting suspiciously cheerier than usual. Yeah, this dude is definitely up to something... she thought, mildly annoyed. Yet...
"Thank you," she finally replied, "After all the chaos the past few months, you and I deserve a Kid Free night. Although..." Emma started to add while turning away to shrug out of her blazer and hang it on a peg, "I'm not entirely holding my breath it being totally kid-free. I mean, come on," turning her attention back to Joseph as she started to unbuckle her gun belt, "The Universe hasn't been that kind to us," she rambled.
