Who: Lilly Kane, Mokuba Kaiba
Where: The high school
What: Lilly and Mokuba break up.
Warnings: This is game canon and very short.
Lilly had been up much of the previous night trying to figure out who would post that video, to no avail. She'd considered Jennifer on a couple of occasions but came to the same conclusion every time--why would Jennifer broadcast to the whole network that she fooled around with her enemy? Jennifer might be a whore, but she wasn't stupid. No, it was someone trying to get at both of them, possibly someone who acted nicely toward both of them. It wouldn't be easy to pick through the list, if not impossible. No. Lilly was determined to find out who was responsible and make them pay.
There was also the question of when it had happened, or even how. Lilly had no recollection of this and at first she had tried to deny it. Someone could have been really good at video editing and just... made it somehow. The more she thought about it, the less of a possibility that seemed, but was it more impossible than Lilly and Jennifer hooking up? There were no two girls in the world who despised each other more than they did.
Then there was Mokuba. How must he be taking all of this? She'd tried calling him the night before but when she got no answer, she had decided that maybe it was best to give him some space. He'd have to come to her eventually, wouldn't he? And she'd be there when he was ready. That had been the plan, anyway, but not everything went according to plan.
Lilly had gone through most of the day hearing whispers--"Maybe they only pretended to hate each other, but they're really lesbian lovers." and "I guess with enough alcohol you can get them to do anything." were among them, though that was certainly not the limit. It seemed that even people who weren't a usual part of the gossip circuit were whispering about the video. This couldn't last too long, could it? Gossip usually died after a week or so when something new came along. A week, however, seemed like an eternity for her.
She turned a corner quickly in attempt to get away from another group of gossipers and found that she had almost run into someone else rounding the corner from the other side. She looked up apologetically, but if she had been planning on saying anything, it had gotten lost the moment her eyes fell on his face.
He didn't look much better than she felt, but even disheveled she had a knack for looking stunning. Not that Lilly personally thought she looked that great that day, but it didn't really matter. She knew that her looks and charm couldn't help her out of this situation.
And if it could, it wouldn't stop her from hating herself. It was her fault he looked so hurt.
She pushed a strand of hair out of her face only because it was bothering her and looked at him with her big green eyes. She wanted to ask him 'How much do you hate me?' but instead, all she uttered was an apology. "I-I'm sorry," she said softly, it was almost a whisper. She wasn't even sure what the apology was for, that generally happened when there were too many things to apologize for at once. Was it a simple apology for almost bumping into him? Or was it an apology for hurting him?
Mokuba's eyes fell on Lilly as she spoke, but all he could feel when he looked at her was pain. He didn't want to see her or talk to her. He didn't want to be there in that moment. She was there, however, looking like a mess but still beautiful. He hated that. He hated that he still found her attractive. He hated that he still cared for her, even after what she had done. He wanted to hate her. He wanted to be angry, but he didn't. He was just hurt and because of whatever it was that was going on with him, it showed all over his face.
The second Mokuba's eyes met hers, Lilly's heart sank to her stomach. He had looked like he was in pain before, but at the moment of realization, he looked completely miserable. Was she that horrible to look at now? She couldn't blame him. While most guys would love to see that video and many likely did, Mokuba wasn't that guy. That was what she had liked about him in the first place and that was what would very possibly cause the end of their relationship.
"I need to get to class," Mokuba said finally, hollowly before pivoting to walk around her.
Lilly froze for a moment. Those were the first words he had said to her after seeing the video? Even telling her he never wanted to see her again would be better than indifference. Don't get her wrong, it wasn't what she wanted at all and it would hurt probably more than she could imagine but at least she would know what was on his mind. At least then she would know if they could get out of this in one piece.
She placed a hand gently on his arm and looked up at him, biting her lip gently. "Call me when you're ready to talk, okay?" she asked him, not expecting a response but hoping for one. While she was hoping, would it be too much to hope for a promise to call her later that night or even reassurance that they could get through this?
Apparently yes.
He stepped just out of her touch before turning toward her. "I don't think I will be ready for a while," he answered her, catching the disappointment in her features. What did she expect? That he could just forget it and they could go back to being the happy couple?
Lilly took a deep breath as her eyes watered. She blinked once to make the tears go away and asked one last question, preparing for the worst. "Will we..." she began, trying to figure out the best way to ask her question. "Can we be okay?" she managed finally. "I mean, can we work through this?"
"No," Mokuba answered before turning away. "I don't think we can."
No amount of preparation could have really readied her for that. As she watched him walk away, her mind was swimming and she hoped that she had hallucinated his response. She knew deep down, however, that it was no hallucination or even a dream. No matter how she tried to interpret his words, they all meant the same thing. They had just broken up.
