Padfoot was coming in handy here. It had certainly made it easy to find Remus. He didn't know Harry's smell, so it wouldn't be as easy to find him, but Sirius figured he'd still cover more ground as a dog than he would as a human. The forest could only be so big, and some part of him implicitly believed there would be something familiar about his godson's scent.
If he was being completely honest, he also needed the ease that came from being the dog. His chest was a jumbled snarly of emotions. He didn't really believe everything the Malfoy kid -- little shit -- was saying, but he knew well enough that something was wrong. He wouldn't let himself form any cohesive thoughts about Lily and James, because it scared him too much. It was impossible, besides. They all took care of each other. It was all going to be all right.
He knew he should have waited for Remus before he took off running through the forest, because he knew Remus would make sure he didn't do anything stupid. But he couldn't wait. He couldn't just sit and watch the comments bubbling up in the magical journal without getting proper answers. So, he set off, on his own, racing across the forest floor, nose to the ground.
It seemed to take ages for him to find the tent that Harry had referred to. It probably only took a few moments. He shifted back to two legs, trying to ignore the way his heart immediately started pounding again, a heavy thudded that threatened to knock him right over.
